Chapter 2: Ground Zero in the Hallway

Leo knelt beside Maya, ignoring the aggressive rumblings of the Rottweiler, who remained stationed like a dark sentinel between the stairs and the tattooed man. Leo’s hands hovered gently over Maya’s shoulders, his touch steady and deliberate. He did not want to move her improperly, knowing the risks of internal trauma given her advanced pregnancy. "Maya, look at me," Leo murmured, his voice low and controlled, carrying a quiet authority that grounded her. Maya blinked back hot tears, nodding faintly as she fought through the blinding wave of abdominal cramps. The beige fabric of her dress was stained with dust from the floorboards, and a small scratch marred her bare shoulder where she had scraped against the wall during the fall.

Across the room, the tattooed man—whose name was Derek—took another hesitant step forward, his voice cracking slightly. "I didn't mean to... I just wanted her to listen," Derek muttered, his tattoos looking stark and menacing under the flickering overhead light. Leo didn't even turn his head to look at Derek. The dismissal was more painful than any punch could have been. "Shut up, Derek," Leo said flatly, his tone devoid of anger, replaced instead by a chilling indifference that made Derek flinch. Buster seized upon Derek’s movement, letting out a sharp, authoritative bark that echoed off the walls. The Rottweiler’s massive jaws snapped shut inches from the air, warning Derek to keep his distance.

Derek swallowed hard, his hands dropping uselessly to his sides. He had lived in this house for two years, believing his dominance and temper were the glue holding their strained finances and chaotic lives together. Now, seeing Maya curled in agony and realizing that his younger brother Leo was no longer the intimidated kid he used to push around, Derek felt the terrifying foundation of his life crumbling beneath him. The scattered baby bottles mocked him from every corner of the hallway—symbols of a future he had just actively tried to destroy in a fit of cruel impatience. Leo pulled out his phone with his free hand, his thumb working swiftly to unlock the screen. He kept his eyes locked on Maya, monitoring her breathing as he dialed emergency services. The unspoken war for the soul of this troubled household had officially begun, and there was no hiding from the wreckage left behind.
