Chapter 5: The Hospital Waiting Room

The sterile fluorescent lighting of the county hospital waiting room buzzed with a low, monotonous hum that frayed the edges of Leo’s remaining patience. He sat in a rigid plastic chair, his white t-shirt rumpled from the events of the evening, staring at the scarred linoleum floor. Buster was naturally not allowed inside the medical facility, so Leo had left the Rottweiler secured safely back at the house with explicit instructions to guard the perimeter, knowing the dog would take his duty seriously. The sterile smell of antiseptic hung thick in the air, mixing with the distant, melancholy sounds of medical equipment beeping down the hallway.
A nurse in blue scrubs finally pushed through the swinging doors, holding a clipboard against her chest. She scanned the sparsely populated waiting area before spotting Leo, who immediately stood up. "Family of Maya Vance?" she called out. "That's me—her brother-in-law. How is she? Is the baby okay?" Leo asked, his voice tight with anxiety. The nurse offered a reassuring, tired smile. "She’s stable, Mr. Vance. The fall caused severe bruising and a lot of emotional shock, but remarkably, the baby is unharmed. She’s resting now, and the doctor wants to keep her overnight for observation to monitor contractions." Leo let out a long, ragged breath he felt like he had been holding for an hour, his shoulders dropping as the immense weight lifted slightly from his chest.
"Can I see her?" Leo asked softly. "Just for a few minutes. She’s awake, but she’s very tired," the nurse replied, stepping aside to let him pass. Walking down the quiet hospital corridor, Leo’s mind raced with practical realities. Maya had no family nearby, and her parents lived across the country, estranged and unable to help. He and Maya had been working odd jobs to save up for this baby, relying on Derek’s empty promises of stability. Now, with Derek out of the picture, the burden of protecting Maya and the incoming child fell entirely on Leo’s twenty-year-old shoulders. He pushed open the door to Room 212, finding Maya lying pale against the white pillows, looking fragile yet fiercely resilient in the dim light.
