Chapter 6: A Quiet Promise

Maya turned her head slowly as the door clicked shut behind Leo, her eyes heavy with exhaustion but clear of immediate panic. A white hospital blanket was pulled up to her chest, and an IV line was taped securely to the back of her bruised hand. Leo pulled a chair close to the bedside, sitting down carefully and resting his forearms on the mattress. "The nurse said the baby is fine," Leo whispered, offering a small, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Maya let out a shaky sigh, a single tear escaping the corner of her eye and tracking down her pale cheek. "I was so scared, Leo. Not just for me... for the little one. If we had lost the baby..." she choked out, unable to finish the sentence.
"You didn't. The baby is safe, and you're safe now," Leo said firmly, reaching out to gently squeeze her uninjured hand. Maya squeezed back with surprising strength. "Where is Derek?" she asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper, as if uttering his name might summon him back into the room. "He’s gone from the house. I made him pack his things and leave," Leo answered without hesitation. Maya closed her eyes, the tension visibly draining from her face, though a shadow of worry remained. "He’s going to make a scene when he realizes he has nowhere to go. He has no money, Leo."
"I don't care where he goes," Leo replied coldly. "He crossed a line he can never come back from. We are going to figure this out, Maya. You, me, and this baby. We don't need him." Maya looked at her young brother-in-law, marveling at how quickly he had stepped into the role of a provider and protector. When Derek had brought Maya into their shared rental a year ago, Leo had been quiet, working late shifts at a local auto shop and keeping to himself. Over time, as Derek’s drinking and temper worsened, it was Leo who had quietly made sure Maya had groceries, Leo who had driven her to early prenatal appointments when Derek forgot, and Leo who had stood guard when the shouting started. This crisis had only revealed what was already true: Leo was the true anchor of this fractured family.
