Chapter 3: Sirens in the Distance

The muffled wail of an approaching ambulance pierced the quiet suburban night, growing louder with every passing second until the flashing red and blue lights painted the hallway walls in dizzying strokes of color. Maya was still clutching her stomach, though the sharpest edge of her initial panic had subsided into a dull, throbbing ache. Leo stayed firmly by her side, whispering steady words of reassurance while occasionally throwing a sharp, warning glance toward Derek. The older man had retreated a few paces, leaning heavily against the wall with his head bowed, the harsh fluorescent light catching the dark ink wrapping around his thick forearms. He looked smaller now, stripped of the explosive bravado that had fueled his outburst just moments before.

Buster remained planted near the base of the stairs, refusing to let Derek approach Maya even as the medics prepared to enter. When the heavy front door swung open and two paramedics rushed into the narrow entryway with their medical kits, Buster gave a low, cautionary huff, allowing them passage only because Leo gave the dog a quiet, calming hand signal. The Rottweiler’s intelligence was uncanny; he seemed to understand that these strangers represented help, even if he still viewed Derek as a clear and present threat. One of the paramedics, a calm middle-aged woman named Sarah, immediately knelt beside Maya, opening her kit to check vital signs and gently palpate the areas around the abdomen.

"Talk to me, honey. Where is the pain located?" Sarah asked professionally, her hands moving with practiced efficiency. Maya grimaced, her voice strained as she answered, "Lower... it feels like a heavy weight, and cramping." Leo watched anxiously, his jaw clenched tight. Sarah glanced up at her partner, giving a subtle nod that signaled the need for immediate transport. As they carefully eased Maya onto a rigid spine board to protect against any hidden spinal injuries, Derek stepped forward, reaching out a trembling hand. "Is... is the baby okay? Can I help?" Derek asked, his voice raw. Sarah blocked his path firmly. "Step back, sir. You’ve done enough helping for tonight." The words hit Derek like a physical blow, and he stumbled backward into the shadows as the team wheeled Maya out toward the waiting ambulance.
