Chapter 8 - The Morning After

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the bedroom, casting pale, geometric patterns across the floor. Lily lay perfectly still beneath the heavy blankets, her eyes wide open and staring fixedly at the ceiling. She hadn't slept a wink all night. Every creak of the old house, every shift of the wind against the glass, had sounded like Elena’s footsteps returning to finish what she had started. The digital voice recorder rested silently beneath the floorboard just a few feet away, a dangerous secret that could either save her father or destroy what little remained of their family.
A sharp, double knock rapped against her bedroom door, startling Lily from her exhausted daze.
“Rise and shine, Lily,” Elena’s voice sang out, devoid of any warmth. “We have a very important appointment at the family court services office this morning. Get dressed.”
The door pushed open without waiting for a response. Elena stood in the doorway, having already changed out of her glittering gold sequin dress from the night before. Instead, she wore a sharp, charcoal-gray pantsuit that screamed corporate authority and ruthless efficiency. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail, and her face bore no trace of the frantic mother she had pretended to be for the police officers just twelve hours prior.
Elena’s cold eyes swept over the room, lingering for a fraction of a second on the bed before dropping down to the white medical leg brace strapped to Lily’s leg.
“You're still wearing that ridiculous contraption,” Elena noted, her tone dripping with disdain. “Take it off. You won't need it today. In fact, you won't need it ever again once we meet with the social worker.”
Lily clutched the edge of her blanket tighter, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“The doctor said I have to wear it,” Lily said, forcing her voice to remain as steady as possible despite the terror pooling in her stomach. “If I take it off, my leg will get worse.”
Elena let out a short, cold laugh, stepping further into the room until she towered over the bed.
“Spare me the dramatics, Lily. The doctor was paid off to play his part, just like your father was manipulated into walking right into my trap,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, menacing whisper. “The charade is over. The house is mine, your father is facing twenty years for fraud and assault, and you are entirely under my legal custody now. So do as you're told, or I promise you that prison cell your father is currently sitting in will feel like a vacation compared to what I have planned for you.”
Without waiting for an answer, Elena turned on her heel and strode out of the room, leaving the door wide open.
Lily let out a shaky breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She sat up slowly, her eyes darting toward the loose floorboard. She couldn't leave the house without the voice recorder; it was their only piece of leverage against Elena’s ironclad web of lies. But smuggling a digital device past a woman as observant and ruthless as Elena would require a miracle.
Sliding out of bed, Lily reached down and pried the floorboard open one last time. She retrieved the small recorder, slipping it quickly into the deep pocket of her pink dress. She strapped the white medical leg brace back onto her leg—not because she needed it for mobility anymore, but because it was the only safe hiding place left where Elena wouldn't think to search.
Ten minutes later, Lily stepped out into the hallway and walked toward the front door, where Elena stood tapping her expensive watch impatiently.

“It's about time,” Elena snapped, grabbing Lily’s arm with an ungentle grip. “Let's go. The family court evaluator is waiting for us, and I have a very convincing story to tell.”
