Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Dark

The tiny blinking red light of the digital voice recorder seemed to pulse in time with the frantic beating of Lily’s heart. She sat cross-legged on the floor of her bedroom, the cold wood pressing against her knees as she stared down at the small piece of technology hidden beneath the loose floorboard. Her father had never mentioned this device to her, which meant Julian didn't even know it was there. But someone had placed it in her room, and given the calculating nature of her new stepmother, the presence of the recorder was far from accidental.
With trembling fingers, Lily pressed the small playback button located on the side of the device. The tiny internal speaker hissed with static for a brief moment before a familiar voice cut cleanly through the quiet darkness of the room.
It was Elena’s voice, speaking in a low, conspiratorial whisper that sounded entirely different from the honeyed tones she used in public.
“...just need to wait until the wedding night,” the recorded voice of Elena said clearly. “Once Julian takes the bait and strikes me on camera, the police will have all the pretext they need. The forged documents are already in the safe, waiting for the detective's inspection.”
Lily froze, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying truth washed over her. The entire sequence of events—the argument, the police, her father's arrest—had been meticulously scripted and recorded by Elena weeks before the wedding even took place. The recorder wasn't just a listening device; it was an insurance policy, a trophy of a crime successfully executed.
A second voice crackled through the static on the recording, a deep, unfamiliar male tone that made Lily’s skin crawl.
“And the child?” the unidentified man asked on the tape. “What about the little girl and her medical condition? Won't people start asking questions about the brace?”
Elena’s recorded laugh echoed chillingly through the small bedroom, sounding cruel and devoid of any human empathy.
“Let them ask,” Elena’s voice replied smoothly on the tape. “The brace is just a prop to keep up appearances for the insurance payout and the court sympathy. The moment Julian is locked away and the property transfer is finalized, we drop the medical charade entirely. No one cares about a kid with a fabricated limp once her legal guardian is sitting in a prison cell.”
The recording clicked off, leaving the room in a heavy, suffocating silence. Lily sat frozen, tears finally breaking free and tracking hot paths down her cheeks. The white medical leg brace strapped to her leg suddenly felt heavier than lead, a cruel irony built entirely on lies, greed, and betrayal. Her father was innocent, locked behind bars for a crime he didn't commit, while the woman who orchestrated the entire nightmare slept peacefully just down the hall.
Before Lily could process the full weight of the evidence she was holding, the faint sound of approaching footsteps echoed down the hardwood hallway.
Creak.
The sound was deliberate, slow, and far too close for comfort.
Panic surged through Lily’s veins. She scrambled backward, dropping the digital voice recorder back into the dusty cavity beneath the floorboard and snapping the wood panel back into place just as a sharp knock sounded against her bedroom door.
“Lily,” Elena’s voice called out from the hallway, smooth and chillingly polite through the wooden barrier. “Are you still awake in there? I heard a noise.”

Lily didn't answer. She pulled the blankets up over her shoulders, squeezing her eyes shut as the doorknob began to turn slowly from the outside.
