Chapter 6 - Behind Locked Doors

The heavy slam of the front door echoed through the silent house, cutting off the sound of Julian's protesting voice as the police cruiser's engine revved in the driveway. Inside the dimly lit living room, the atmosphere shifted instantly from theatrical performance to chilling reality. The police were gone, taking Julian with them into the cold embrace of the legal system, leaving Elena alone with the child. The glittering gold sequin dress felt suddenly restrictive against her skin, a costume she no longer needed to maintain for an audience.
Lily stood frozen near the edge of the rug, her small hands clutching the straps of her white medical leg brace. The silence in the room was suffocating, broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of the refrigerator down the hall.
Elena turned slowly away from the door, her soft, manufactured tears vanishing without a trace. Her face settled into a cold, impassive mask as she looked down at the little girl who had just lost her protector.
“Stop trembling like a stray dog,” Elena commanded, her voice dropping the honeyed sweetness she had used in front of the officers. It was sharp, authoritative, and terrifyingly calm. “Your father is gone. There is no one left to play the hero for you now.”
Lily swallowed hard, her lower lip trembling as she tried to back away toward the hallway.
“Where... where are you taking my dad?” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the house.
“To a place where he can't ruin everything I've built,” Elena replied smoothly, walking over to the bar cart to pour herself a glass of amber whiskey. She didn't offer a toast; she simply took a slow sip, letting the burning liquid settle in her throat before turning her sharp gaze back to the child. “And as for you, your little performance with the police was almost impressive. Almost. But we both know the truth about that brace, don't we, Lily?”
Lily flinched, instinctively pulling her leg back as if the metal device had suddenly grown spikes.
“The doctor said I need it,” Lily repeated defensively, though her voice lacked any real conviction.
Elena let out a cold, mocking scoff, setting her glass down on the mahogany table with a sharp clink. She crossed the room in three long, deliberate strides, closing the distance between them until she was towering over the young girl. Without warning, Elena reached down and gripped the metal bar of the leg brace, twisting it slightly just enough to send a sharp, agonizing pinch into Lily’s skin.
Lily gasped, biting down hard on her lower lip to keep from screaming out loud.
“The doctor said whatever I paid him to say,” Elena whispered fiercely, leaning down so her face was inches from Lily's ear. “Just like your father signed whatever I placed in front of him. Now, go to your room. We have a very busy morning ahead of us tomorrow, and I expect total obedience.”
Lily didn't argue. She turned on her heel, the heavy leg brace clacking rhythmically against the floor with every painful, deliberate step she took down the dark hallway. She slipped into her small bedroom, closing the door softly behind her before sliding down the wood paneling until she hit the cold floor.
She pulled her knees up to her chest, trying to quiet her ragged breathing in the dark. The house felt entirely different now—it wasn't a home anymore; it was a cage. She reached out in the dark, her fingers brushing against the edge of her bedside table, where a loose floorboard had always felt slightly uneven. Julian had shown it to her months ago, telling her it was a secret place to hide her favorite drawings.
With shaking fingers, Lily wedged her fingernails into the crevice of the wood and pried the floorboard loose. Reaching down into the dusty cavity, her fingers brushed against something cold and metallic that didn't belong to her.

She pulled the object out into the faint moonlight filtering through the window, gasping softly when she realized what it was. It wasn't a drawing. It was a small, high-end digital voice recorder, and its tiny red indicator light was blinking steadily in the dark.
