Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Safe

The weight of the accusation hung heavily in the air as the ballroom grew deathly quiet. Julian stared at Elena, recognizing the cold, calculating glint in her eyes for what it truly was: a premeditated trap. She hadn’t just lost her temper when she ripped the white medical leg brace off Lily’s leg; she had intentionally provoked him into a public outburst to lay the groundwork for this exact police intervention.
“You planned this,” Julian whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on him with sickening clarity. “The marriage, the venue, the argument... it was all an excuse to isolate me and hand the authorities a pretext to investigate.”
Elena didn't bother to deny it. She simply smoothed the glittering gold fabric of her sequin dress and turned her attention back to the two police officers.
“Officer, my husband is clearly unstable and prone to aggressive outbursts, as you witnessed just moments ago,” Elena said, pitching her voice to sound entirely reasonable and concerned. “He insists on keeping the child's medical records locked away, refusing to let me, her legal stepmother, review her treatment plans or verify the legitimacy of her disability claims.”
The senior officer, whose name tag read Detective Miller, frowned deeply as he flipped open the manila folder. He glanced between Elena and Julian, weighing the volatile domestic scene against the official paperwork in his hands.
“Mr. Vance, under the terms of the emergency petition, we are authorized to inspect the medical records and the device in question immediately,” Detective Miller stated, his tone leaving no room for argument. “If you refuse cooperation, we will have to take temporary protective custody of the child pending a full family court evaluation.”
At the mention of protective custody, Lily let out a sharp, frightened gasp and gripped Julian’s brown suit jacket even tighter.
“Daddy, don't let them take me,” the little girl cried softly, her pigtails shaking as she buried her face deeper against his chest.
“I won't let anyone take you, sweetie,” Julian promised fiercely, kissing the top of her head. He glared at Detective Miller. “I will cooperate fully, Officer. My home safe contains every single prescription, surgical report, and physical therapy log from her pediatric specialist. But I want it noted for the record that my wife has actively attempted to sabotage my daughter's treatment tonight.”
Elena offered the detective a tragic, self-deprecating smile, playing the part of the long-suffering spouse to perfection.
“He’s in deep denial about her progress, Officer. It breaks my heart,” Elena murmured, feigning a soft sigh.
Twenty minutes later, the glittering ballroom was abandoned, and the small group reconvened at Julian’s suburban home. Julian spun the dial of the heavy wall safe hidden behind a family portrait, his fingers trembling slightly under the watchful eyes of the police and his deceitful new wife. He pulled the heavy steel door open, reaching inside to grab the thick blue binder containing Lily's entire medical history.

Instead of the blue binder, Julian’s hand grasped an empty, unfamiliar manila envelope stamped with an ominous legal seal. He pulled it out slowly, his stomach dropping into a bottomless void as he read the bold header printed across the top.
