Chapter 3 - The Badge at the Door

The sudden appearance of the police officers drained the remaining color from the ballroom, silencing the already hushed murmurs of the remaining wedding guests. Julian stood frozen with Lily still clutched in his arms, the metal of the medical leg brace pressing coldly against his hip. He blinked against the harsh overhead lights, his mind racing through a dozen impossible scenarios. He had struck Elena in the heat of a volatile argument, yes, but domestic assault calls rarely brought two full uniformed officers within minutes of the incident, complete with an official investigation folder.
“I am Julian Vance,” he replied, his voice strained but steady as he shifted Lily slightly to get a better grip. “What is the meaning of this intrusion?”
Before the senior officer could step forward, Elena glided past Julian with the practiced grace of a seasoned predator. The glittering gold sequins of her dress caught the light, gleaming mockingly against the grim reality of the situation. She touched her reddened cheek lightly with two manicured fingers, offering the officers a fragile, tragic smile that completely reframed her as the helpless victim of domestic violence.
“Officer, thank God you're here,” Elena said, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. “My husband... he just snapped. He attacked me in front of our guests. And he’s keeping vital medical information hidden about my stepdaughter's condition.”
Julian stared at her in absolute disbelief. The sheer audacity of her lie left him momentarily breathless.
“You lying witch!” Julian shouted, taking a protective step backward. “You just tried to rip her brace off! You told her she was faking her disability!”
The older officer held up a leather-gloved hand, cutting Julian off with a stern, authoritative gesture. He looked down at Lily, who shrank further into her father's chest, and then back to the manila folder in his hands.
“Mr. Vance, we received an anonymous tip tonight,” the officer stated, his tone flat and professional. “An emergency child welfare and medical fraud alert filed under your home address. Specifically regarding the necessity of the patient’s medical device and suspected financial manipulation of disability funds.”
The words hit Julian like a physical blow. Financial manipulation? Disability funds? Lily needed that brace to walk; it was prescribed by her orthopedic surgeon after a devastating accident. It had nothing to do with money.
“That’s completely absurd,” Julian stammered, his chest tightening. “Her doctor’s reports are right in our home safe. This is a setup.”
Elena smiled softly, a look of pure triumph flashing briefly in her dark eyes.

“Are they in the safe, Julian?” Elena asked sweetly, stepping closer to the officers. “Or are the real documents hidden somewhere else?”
