Chapter 1 - The Glitters of Betrayal

The sharp, metallic click of the medical leg brace being yanked away echoed disturbingly against the festive walls of the grand ballroom. Seven-year-old Lily sat on the polished hardwood floor, her chest heaving as silent tears spilled over her flushed cheeks. The white tiered wedding cake stood tall in the background, a pristine monument of sugar and frosting that now overlooked a scene of domestic cruelty. Elena stood above the child, her dark hair swept into an elaborate updo, the glittering gold sequin dress she wore catching the harsh chandelier light and casting blinding reflections across the room. Her face was twisted in an ugly, venomous sneer.

“Stop pretending you're crippled!” Elena snapped, her voice vibrating with unfiltered fury. She kicked the cold steel brace aside, sending it skittering across the floor toward the base of the multi-layered cake.

Across the room, Julian bolted upright from his seat at the head table. The crisp fabric of his brown suit rustled sharply as he pushed his chair backward. His short dark hair was slightly mussed, and his eyes widened in horror as he processed the scene unfolding just feet away from him. Without wasting a single second, Julian rushed over, dropping immediately to his knees beside his trembling daughter on the floor. His hands, usually so steady, trembled slightly as he picked up the cold metal device.

Gently, tenderly, Julian began fastening and adjusting the white medical leg brace back onto Lily's thin, bruised leg, securing the straps with practiced care.

“Daddy, she took it off,” Lily sobbed, her small fingers clutching desperately at the lapel of Julian’s brown suit jacket.

Elena stood a few paces away with her arms tightly crossed over her chest, looking down coldly with a stern, unapologetic expression carved into her features.

“Pain will make her stronger,” Elena stated coldly, her voice devoid of maternal warmth or remorse.

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He stood up suddenly, all the pent-up tension in his body snapping in an instant. With a sharp, resounding crack, his hand struck Elena across the face, knocking her head sideways and sending her staggering against the edge of the mahogany table. Without waiting to see how she recovered, Julian rushed back down to his knees to comfort the weeping girl.

“She needed that brace!” Julian shouted angrily, pulling Lily protectively into his arms.

Elena slowly straightened up, lifting a trembling hand to her reddening cheek. She didn't yell. Instead, a chilling, triumphant smirk slowly spread across her lips.

“You think this is the worst of it, Julian?” Elena whispered, her voice carrying a dark secret that made his blood run cold.
