Chapter 9 - The Trap Closes

The rhythmic thumping of the helicopter blades overhead became deafening, rattling the remaining glass shards in their frames and sending a fresh wave of dust raining down from the vaulted ceiling. Julian pulled his young daughter and the baby closer to the reinforced concrete base of the main structural pillar, shielding them with his own body as Elena took up a defensive position beside Arthur near the jammed service door.
Richard Vance groaned from the altar steps, clutching his bleeding shoulder while a manic, desperate laugh escaped his lips.
"You can't fight the corporation, Julian!" Richard shouted over the roar of the rotors. "They own the skies, they own the streets, and they sure as hell own the explosives wired to the structural columns of this hotel!"
Julian’s jaw tightened. He ignored his uncle, focusing entirely on the terrified face of his daughter. The little girl buried her face in his tuxedo jacket, trembling silently while the baby slept on, oblivious to the war zone surrounding them.
"Daddy, are we going to die?" the girl whispered, her small voice breaking Julian’s heart.
"Never," Julian promised fiercely, pressing a kiss to the top of her blonde head. "I didn't spend ten years searching for you just to let them take you away again."
Arthur slammed his heavy boot against the metal service door once more, the hinges groaning in protest but refusing to yield to brute force. "The locking mechanism is digital, tied to the hotel’s main grid! Someone in the penthouse is overriding every manual override!"
Clara dragged herself across the floor toward Julian, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the hem of his ruined tuxedo trousers. "Julian, please! Take me with you! I know the security codes to the basement service tunnels! It’s the only way out!"
Julian looked down at her, his expression unreadable in the harsh glare of the helicopter spotlight sweeping through the room. "Why should I trust a single word you say, Clara? You lied about who you were. You lied about these children."
"Because my father built this hotel!" Clara screamed, tears streaming through the soot on her face. "He put a private elevator behind the altar wall! It bypasses the master grid entirely!"
Before Julian could evaluate whether Clara’s desperate claim was another trap, the harsh red laser sights of multiple automatic weapons suddenly cut through the smoke from the balcony overlooking the ballroom.
