Chapter 6 - Darkness and Deception

The floor violently heaved beneath their feet as a concussive shockwave ripped through the foundation of the luxury hotel, shattering every remaining window in the grand ballroom. Shards of glass rained down like lethal hail. Julian lunged forward, throwing his body over his daughter and the baby just as a heavy gold chandelier crashed down onto the exact spot where they had been standing seconds earlier.

Pitch blackness consumed the room, save for the flickering orange glow of emergency lights struggling to life near the service exits.

"Stay down!" Julian yelled over the ringing in his ears, his hands clamped tightly over his daughter’s small shoulders.

The acrid smell of sulfur and burning plastic choked the air. In the chaos, the sounds of scuffling boots echoed through the smoke. Julian strained his eyes through the haze, searching for Elena, Arthur, and Clara in the shifting shadows.

A sharp gasp pierced the gloom from near the altar.

"Julian! Help me!" Clara shrieked, her voice frantic and laced with genuine terror.

Julian hesitated. Every instinct told him to let her burn in the mess she had created, but he needed answers about who was orchestrating the hit squad. Gripping the heavy revolver in his right hand, he crawled forward on his hands and knees, navigating the debris of gold chairs and broken glass.

A hand suddenly clamped around Julian’s ankle with bone-crushing strength.

Julian spun around, raising the butt of the gun to strike, but stopped short as a cold, metal barrel pressed firmly against his forehead.

"Drop the gun, Vance, or I paint this white floor with your brains," a harsh voice growled out of the smoke. It wasn't Miller. It was a voice Julian had heard every single morning during board meetings at his own corporate headquarters.

"Director Vance?" Julian whispered, disbelief paralyzing his limbs. "Uncle Richard... you're behind this?"

A low, cruel chuckle vibrated through the muzzle of the gun. "Someone had to keep the company from going under, Julian. You were too soft, too distracted by domestic bliss. And clearly, your taste in women is disastrous."

Julian’s mind raced. His own uncle, the man who had raised him after his parents died, was the mastermind who had burned his house, faked his wife's death, and hired assassins to wipe out his bloodline.

Before Richard could pull the trigger, a blinding flash of light erupted from the service doorway, and a gunshot echoed through the smoke.
