Chapter 5 - The Ghost of the Altar

A sharp, metallic click echoed through the smoke-filled ballroom as the fourth figure stepped directly into the path of the laser sight. It was a woman with ash-blonde hair, wearing a torn, soot-stained emerald dress that looked remarkably like the one from the faded photograph in Julian’s pocket. Her face was gaunt, bearing faint burn scars along her jawline, but her eyes burned with an icy, familiar intensity.
The masked man’s weapon wavered instantly, the red laser dancing wildly across the marble floor.
"Drop your weapon, Miller," the woman said, her voice raspy from smoke and years of enforced silence, yet cutting through the room like a razor.
Julian froze, the blood rushing in his ears. He stared at the woman, his mind refusing to process the impossible reality standing right before his eyes. The woman he had mourned for ten years, the woman buried in a closed-casket funeral paid for by his enemies, was staring right back at him.
"Elena?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking violently. "No... that's impossible. I buried you."
Elena didn't look at Julian; her piercing gaze remained fixed on the masked intruder. "You buried an empty casket, Julian. Clara's father made sure of that so I would never be able to claim the inheritance."
Clara let out a hysterical laugh from the floor, her makeup running in black streaks down her pale cheeks. "You're supposed to be dead! The deal was—"
"The deal is over, Clara," Elena interrupted coldly, pulling a small silver detonator from the pocket of her torn dress. "You thought you could buy your happy ending with my husband and my children, but you just walked right into the trap I set."
Miller, the lead intruder, cursed loudly, lowering his rifle slightly as he realized he was now caught in a fatal crossfire. "You're insane, woman. The board will wipe out everyone in this room before you make it out of this city."
Elena smiled, a grim, humorless expression that sent a chill down Julian’s spine. "Let them try. The building is already rigged."

Before Miller could process the threat, a massive explosion rocked the lower levels of the hotel, shaking the grand ballroom and plunging the entire room into total, blinding darkness.
