Chapter 13 - The Biometric Lock

The green glow of the biometric scanner on the open laptop screen cast an eerie hue across Marcus Vance’s cold, calculated face. The heavy pistol rested casually in his right hand, its suppressor pointing straight at Julian’s chest with unnerving steadiness.
"Place the silver crest necklace on the scanner, Julian," Marcus commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "The micro-drive inside contains the master signature. Once you authenticate it, the offshore assets transfer to our family trust, and this nightmare ends."
Julian stood frozen, his hand still clamped tightly around the silver necklace in his tuxedo pocket. He looked back at his daughter, who was clinging desperately to the hem of his ruined jacket, and then at the sleeping baby in her arms.
"And if I refuse?" Julian asked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his veins.
Marcus sighed, shaking his head with feigned disappointment. "Then my men outside the drainage tunnel will flood this entire underground corridor with sewer gas, and your children will join you in the ghost stories this family loves to tell."
Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, raising his revolver. "You won't get away with this, Marcus. The federal marshals know we're down here."
Before Arthur could pull the trigger, a sharp click echoed from behind them as Clara suddenly pressed a small, hidden derringer pistol directly against the small of Arthur’s back.
Arthur froze, his eyes widening in betrayal. "Clara... what are you doing?"
Clara’s face was pale, tears carving clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks, but her hand was remarkably steady. "I'm sorry, Arthur. My family's debts are too high. Marcus promised me immunity if I delivered the necklace."
Julian stared at Clara, feeling a profound, chilling emptiness replace his anger. "You really have no soul left, do you?"
"I have survival, Julian!" Clara sobbed, her voice cracking under the pressure. "You don't know what it’s like to lose everything!"
Elena slowly lowered her assault rifle, her eyes locking onto Marcus with cold calculation. "You think you've won, Marcus? Look closer at the necklace in his hand."
Marcus frowned, his pistol tracking slightly toward Elena. "What are you talking about?"
Julian pulled the silver crest necklace from his pocket. With a swift, practiced motion, he popped open the hidden compartment—not to reveal the micro-drive, but to show that the internal slot was completely empty.
Marcus’s face drained of color for a split second before his eyes narrowed in fury. "Where is the drive?"
Julian smiled grimly. "I left it in the pocket of the man you sent to kill me upstairs. And right now, the federal explosives squad is detonating it alongside the rest of your offshore servers."

Marcus raised his pistol with lethal intent, his finger tightening on the trigger just as the overhead concrete structure shuddered violently from a massive explosion echoing from the surface above.
