Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The crystal chandeliers of the grand St. Jude ballroom cast a blinding, cruel illumination over rows of polished gold chairs. Julian Vance stood frozen near the altar, his black tuxedo stiff against his chest, clutching a silver family crest necklace and an old, faded photograph of a woman holding an infant. Just feet away, his newly minted bride, Clara, wept uncontrollably beneath her heavy white veil, her shoulders shaking with pathetic desperation. The air tasted of expensive champagne and sudden, suffocating ash.
Before them, a young blonde girl in a light blue dress and white cardigan clung tightly to a wailing baby, crying out in sheer terror.
"Daddy!" the girl screamed, her small voice piercing the heavy silence of the opulent venue.
Julian stepped forward sharply, his body rigid as he thrust a hand out to block Clara from advancing any further. His jaw clenched until the muscles ached, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fury.
"Don't touch those children!" Julian roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Clara stumbled backward, her manicured hands flying to her mouth as she choked on a sob. "Julian, please, let me explain—"
"Explain what?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, trembling whisper. "Explain why my abandoned past just walked down the aisle of our wedding?"
He looked down at the silver crest in his palm, then at the faded photograph of the woman he had buried in his heart a decade ago. Every detail in the image matched the terrified girl standing before him. Clara’s silence was deafening, her tear-streaked face confirming every horrific suspicion racing through Julian’s mind.
"You knew," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with betrayal. "You knew who they were the entire time we were together."
Clara shook her head frantically, stepping toward the edge of the dais. "I did it to protect you, Julian. You don't know what—"

Before Clara could finish her desperate excuse, the massive oak doors at the back of the ballroom slowly creaked open, revealing a towering silhouette framed by the harsh midday sun.
