Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Doorway

The heavy oak doors groaned as they swung fully open, casting a long, skeletal shadow across the pristine white carpet of the ballroom. Julian lowered his hand from Clara, his eyes snapping away from the weeping girl and the baby to fixate on the figure standing in the threshold. It was an older man wearing a charcoal trench coat, his salt-and-pepper hair disheveled, holding a worn leather briefcase like a shield.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized the man instantly. It was Arthur Pendelton, the former family attorney who had vanished the exact night Julian’s first family home burned to the ground ten years ago.

"You're late, Arthur," Julian shouted, his voice shaking with a volatile mixture of grief and unadulterated rage.

Arthur did not flinch. He slowly stepped inside, his hardened gaze sweeping over the gold chairs, the terrified blonde girl holding the baby, and finally resting on Clara, who was now trembling so violently she could barely stand in her designer wedding gown.

"I'm right on time, Julian," Arthur replied, his voice deep and gravelly. "You were never supposed to marry her. She made a deal she couldn't keep."

Clara shrieked, lunging toward the attorney with surprising ferocity. "Shut up! You promised you would keep them hidden!"

Julian interposed his body between Clara and the attorney, raising the silver crest necklace like a warning beacon. "Nobody is moving an inch until someone tells me why my flesh and blood were abandoned, and why my own wife helped bury the truth!"

Arthur slowly unbuttoned his trench coat, reaching inside the breast pocket with agonizing slowness. "The fire wasn't an accident, Julian. And Clara didn't just find these children today. She's been paying my retainer for the last three years to keep them locked away in a coastal foster home."

Julian stared at Clara, the color draining entirely from his face. The woman he had loved, trusted, and promised to spend the rest of his life with looked like a total stranger.

"Is this true?" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously soft.

Clara opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, the crying baby in the young girl's arms suddenly went entirely silent, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic pounding of footsteps echoing from the hallway outside.
