Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The splintered wood of the heavy doors rained across the white carpet as three armed men in identical dark suits stepped into the ballroom, their faces hidden behind matte black tactical masks. The glittering chandeliers caught the dull, ominous gleam of suppressants fitted to the ends of their automatic weapons.
Julian reacted with instinctual survival, shoving the young blonde girl and the baby behind a massive marble pillar just as the first suppressed shot shattered the crystal vase of white roses.
"Get down!" Julian roared, shielding the children with his own body.
Arthur Pendelton hit the floor with surprising agility, tearing open his leather briefcase and pulling out a heavy, black-steel revolver. Without hesitation, the aging attorney fired two rapid shots toward the ceiling, shattering the central chandelier and plunging half the grand ballroom into sudden, dramatic shadows.
Clara screamed in absolute terror, crawling frantically across the floor away from the intruders, her white wedding dress ruined by dust and glass.
One of the masked men advanced steadily down the center aisle, his boots crunching over the discarded gold chairs. "Hand over the children and the necklace, Vance," the man commanded, his voice distorted through a tactical comms unit. "You lost your right to them a decade ago."
Julian’s pulse pounded in his ears. He looked down at the silver crest necklace clutched in his bleeding hand, then at his daughter peeking out from behind the marble pillar with tears streaming down her pale cheeks. He realized then that the necklace wasn't just a family heirloom; it was a digital key containing the offshore financial accounts that could destroy the syndicate behind his ruin.
"You'll have to kill me first," Julian snarled, rising from the floor with the heavy revolver Arthur had slid across the carpet toward him.
The masked man raised his weapon, locking the laser sight directly onto the center of Julian’s chest.

"Gladly," the intruder whispered, tightening his finger around the trigger just as the smoke cleared to reveal a fourth person stepping out from the shadows of the altar.
