Chapter 9 - The Home Invasion

The live video feed on Julian’s phone screen showed a terrifying reality that instantly eclipsed the federal standoff in the ballroom. The camera mounted above his home’s front porch flickered to life, illuminating the rainy night outside. Three shadowy figures dressed in tactical gear were methodically bypassing the perimeter security locks, their movements efficient, practiced, and entirely ruthless.
“Julian? What is it?” Lily whispered, noticing the sudden draining of color from her husband’s face as he stared fixedly at the glowing screen in his palm.
Agent Miller stepped closer, sensing that the dynamic in the room had shifted once again. “Mr. Vance, hand over the device. We don't have time for local distractions.”
“Distractions?” Julian barked a harsh, bitter laugh, spinning the phone around so the federal agent could clearly see the tactical team breaching his front door in real time. “My home is currently being raided by an armed enforcement squad. And I can guarantee you, Agent Miller, they aren't looking for wedding presents. They’re looking for the exact hard drive you’re trying to confiscate right now.”
Agent Miller grabbed the phone, his professional detachment shattering instantly as he watched the live feed of the break-in. The intruders had already smashed the front glass panel and were systematically sweeping the ground floor with suppressed automatic weapons drawn.
“Dispatch, this is Agent Miller,” the federal investigator barked into his shoulder radio, his voice dropping into a panicked register. “We have an active, unauthorized breach at the Vance residence. Repeat, active breach in progress. Send local backup immediately!”
“It’s too late for local backup,” Julian said coldly, reaching out to snatch his phone back from the agent’s hand. He slipped the hard drive back into his inner jacket pocket and turned to look at little Chloe, who had finally stood up from her chair, sensing the rising panic in the room. “They knew we had the drive. The moment David Miller made that phone call, the board realized their trap had failed. They’ve sent a clean-up crew.”
Lily grabbed Julian’s arm, her fingers digging desperately into his tailored black suit sleeve. Her elaborate white lace gown rustled sharply as she pulled him toward her, her face a mask of absolute terror. “Julian, the nanny! Sarah is still at the house with the secondary backup server! If they breach the safe room, she has no idea what’s coming for her!”
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. The nanny, a young college student they trusted implicitly, was currently alone in the house with the physical hardware that could corroborate every single file on the hard drive he carried in his pocket. If the intruders reached that server before federal backup arrived, their entire case—and Sarah’s life—would go up in smoke.
“Agent Miller,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute command that brooked no argument. “You want your high-profile corporate corruption case? Then you and your men are going to get us out of this ballroom right now, and you’re going to secure my home before those mercenaries execute my staff.”
Agent Miller stared at Julian for a fraction of a second, weighed the immense professional risk against the undeniable duty staring him in the face, and nodded sharply. “Move out!” he barked to his agents. “Secure the perimeter and prep the transport vehicles immediately!”

As the small tactical detail formed a protective cocoon around Julian, Lily, and little Chloe, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom suddenly creaked open, revealing an unexpected figure standing in the doorway holding a smoking pistol.
