Chapter 12 - The Subterranean Escape

The descent into the underground parking garage felt agonizingly slow, the ancient cables of the freight elevator groaning in protest as they bore the weight of six souls trapped in a steel box. The air grew noticeably cooler and smelled sharply of stale gasoline, damp concrete, and exhaust fumes. Julian kept one hand resting securely on little Chloe’s shoulder, feeling the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of her breathing, which served as his only anchor in the swirling chaos.

Agent Miller kept his service weapon pressed firmly against Marcus’s spine, the mercenary standing silent and subdued against the corner wall, his arrogant smirk entirely vanished. Lily stood beside Julian, her fingers lightly brushing against the fabric of his black suit jacket, her eyes fixed on the illuminated floor indicator as it slowly ticked downward toward Level B3.

“When those doors open,” Agent Miller instructed in a hushed, tactical whisper, “we move fast. The extraction vehicles should be waiting near the service bay, but given the level of infiltration we’ve seen tonight, assume the entire garage is compromised.”

Julian nodded grimly. He reached inside his jacket, confirming the hard drive was still secure, and mentally mapped out the layout of the parking level. There were dozens of concrete pillars, blind corners, and shadow-drenched service alcoves that could easily conceal an ambush team waiting to wipe them out the second the elevator stopped.

With a final metallic shudder, the elevator car ground to a halt. A soft, automated chime rang out, completely out of place given the lethal tension in the air. The heavy steel doors slowly parted, revealing the vast, dimly lit expanse of the underground parking garage.

At first, the garage appeared entirely empty. The flickering fluorescent overhead tubes hummed a low, monotonous tune, casting long, eerie shadows across rows of luxury sedans and utility vehicles. Dust motes danced lazily in the cold air.

“Clear,” one of the federal tactical agents muttered into his headset, stepping cautiously out of the elevator with his weapon raised and sweeping side-to-side.

“Don’t let your guard down,” Julian warned quietly, stepping out right behind him with Lily and Chloe close in tow.

They moved in a tight, disciplined formation toward the distant service bay where Agent Miller’s unmarked transport vehicles were supposed to be parked. The sound of their footsteps echoed sharply off the concrete floor, breaking the oppressive silence of the subterranean level. Every shadow seemed to stretch and twist into a potential threat, making every breath feel like a calculated risk.

They were halfway across the main thoroughfare when the overhead fluorescent lights suddenly flickered and died all at once, plunging the entire garage into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
