Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

The screen of Marcus’s phone displayed an array of financial transactions, glowing brightly in the dimming ambient light of the ballroom. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his fist hovering inches from Marcus’s jaw. The numbers flashing on the display were not romantic love letters or casual late-night chat logs; they were bank transfers, large and systematic, routed through shell companies that bore uncanny resemblances to corporate entities Julian managed every single day.
“Look at the routing numbers, Julian,” Marcus urged, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “You think this is just about an affair? You’re looking at the symptoms while the disease is actively eating away at your entire empire.”
Lily let out a sharp gasp, covering her mouth with trembling hands. “Marcus, no! You swore you wouldn’t bring that into this! We agreed to keep the corporate restructuring completely separate from our personal arrangements!”
Julian slowly lowered his hand, his mind spinning as he tried to reconcile the betrayal of his marriage with the sudden, terrifying implication of corporate sabotage. He looked from Lily’s panicked face to the financial data glowing on Marcus’s screen. Little Chloe shifted uneasily in his arms, sensing the seismic shift in the atmosphere from mere heartbreak to a cold, calculated war.
“Corporate restructuring?” Julian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. He turned his head slowly to look at his new bride. “Is that what you call looting my company accounts while sharing a bed with this man?”
“It’s not what it looks like!” Lily pleaded, taking a desperate step forward and reaching out a hand, though she stopped inches away when Julian flinched back as if her touch were toxic. “Julian, please, just let me explain the timeline. The money was never stolen; it was a leveraged maneuver to protect us from a hostile takeover by your board members.”
“Don’t lie to me anymore!” Julian shouted, the anger finally breaking through his stoic exterior. Several guests near the exit flinched at the sudden volume. “You slept with him, you lied to my daughter, and now you’re telling me you’ve been draining my assets under the guise of financial protection? Who do you take me for?”
Marcus slid his phone back into his pocket, sensing that the bomb he had dropped was detonating exactly as planned. A subtle, predatory smile flickered at the corner of his mouth before he quickly smoothed his features back into neutrality. “She’s not entirely lying about the board, Julian. Your own Chief Financial Officer has been working with them from the inside. Lily was trying to stay one step ahead of the knife they were sharpening for your back.”
“And sleeping with you was part of the strategic defense plan?” Julian’s voice dripped with bitter sarcasm. He shifted Chloe slightly, feeling the little girl’s breathing steady as she watched the adults with unnerving maturity.

Before Lily could formulate a defense, her phone—still resting on the bridal table across the room—began to ring loudly, vibrating against the wooden surface with a relentless, jarring rhythm that cut through the heavy silence. All three adults turned their heads toward the sound as the caller ID flashed an unexpected name.
