Chapter 13 - Blackout in the Garage

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness triggered an instant, collective intake of breath from the group. The only illumination came from the faint, green glow of emergency exit signs hanging far across the cavernous parking level.

“Hold position!” Agent Miller’s voice cut through the dark, sharp and authoritative. “Night vision on! Do not fire unless you have a positive ID!”

Julian immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms securely around little Chloe to shield her from any blind crossfire. His heart hammered furiously against his ribs, but his mind remained ice-cold and laser-focused. He could feel Lily’s hand gripping his shoulder tightly in the dark, her breathing shallow and rapid.

“They cut the main power grid to the sub-levels,” Lily whispered near his ear, her voice trembling slightly. “They’re using thermal imaging goggles. They can see our body heat through the dark.”

Before Julian could respond, the chilling sound of revving engines echoed off the concrete walls from multiple directions simultaneously. Headlights suddenly blasted on with blinding intensity, high beams slashing through the darkness and pinning the group directly in their searing glare. Four black armored SUVs emerged from the shadowed alcoves, roaring toward them at breakneck speed with tires screeching against the pavement.

“Incoming!” Agent Miller roared, opening fire instantly as the lead vehicle barreled straight down the lane toward their position.

The air erupted into a chaotic symphony of screaming tires, deafening gunfire, and shattering safety glass. Bullets chewed into the concrete pillars, sending dangerous plumes of stone dust flying everywhere. The federal agents returned fire with disciplined fury, their muzzle flashes illuminating the chaotic scene like strobe lights at a nightmare rave.

“We have to move, now!” Julian yelled, scooping Chloe up into his arms and sprinting toward the nearest heavy concrete structural pillar with Lily right at his heels.

One of the armored SUVs slammed on its brakes, skidding sideways to block their only path to the service exit. The passenger door flew open, and a heavily armored operative stepped out, leveling an assault rifle directly at Julian and his family.

Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, a sharp crack echoed from the shadows behind the SUVs. Marcus—who had managed to slip away during the initial chaos of the blackout—appeared out of nowhere, holding a weapon he had stripped from a fallen guard. He fired two precise shots into the armored operative’s shoulder, dropping the man instantly.

“What are you doing?” Lily shouted over the din of gunfire, staring at Marcus in absolute bewilderment as he dove behind the same concrete pillar for cover.

“Saving my own skin,” Marcus yelled back, his face streaked with sweat and soot. “The board didn’t just write me off—they wired a localized explosive charge to my comms-unit when they realized the op was failing! If we don’t get out of this garage in the next sixty seconds, we’re all going up in smoke!”

Julian stared at Marcus, processing the sheer, sociopathic betrayal coming full circle. Before he could process a response, his phone—still clutched tightly in his hand—flashed with a terrifying new alert from the building’s centralized management system: Sub-level structural detonation sequence initiated.
