Chapter 7 - The Wedding Dress Vault

The small black hard drive looked entirely out of place against the pristine, elaborate white lace of Lily’s wedding gown. Julian stared at it for a moment, marveling at the sheer audacity of hiding digital evidence of corporate espionage inside the most traditional garment a woman could possibly wear. He reached out, his fingers brushing against hers as he took the device, feeling the residual warmth of her skin before closing his fist around the cold metal casing.
“Every transaction, every encrypted communication, every threat letter they sent me—it’s all on there,” Lily explained rapidly, her breathing still shallow as she watched Julian’s face for any sign of lingering doubt. “I spent the last two months extracting their master files while pretending to collaborate with Marcus. But Julian, we only have a very small window of time before they realize the backdoor has been permanently locked.”
Julian slipped the hard drive into the inner pocket of his tailored black suit jacket, securing it safely against his chest. The betrayal that had shattered his heart moments ago was rapidly being buried beneath the ruthless instincts of a man who had built a multi-million-dollar empire from the ground up. He wasn’t just a heartbroken groom anymore; he was a cornered apex predator preparing to strike back at the hunters.
“Marcus,” Julian said thoughtfully, his eyes narrowing as he pieced the conspiracy together. “If Marcus was helping you execute this, and playing along with the affair to keep the board convinced you were on their side, does he know where they’re storing the physical backup servers?”
Lily shook her head, a lock of dark hair falling across her pale forehead. “Marcus is a mercenary, Julian. He was playing a double game for the highest bidder. He helped me because I promised him a cut of the recovered assets once the board was dismantled, but I don’t trust him any further than I can throw him. If the board offers him more money to switch sides again, he’ll hand us over to them without a second thought.”
“Then we don’t rely on Marcus,” Julian stated firmly, turning on his heel to look across the cavernous ballroom where little Chloe was quietly engrossed in the tablet. “We take this straight to federal enforcement before the board realizes their primary leverage is gone.”
Before Lily could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the ballroom swung open once more, not with the stealthy creep of an interloper, but with the heavy, authorized thud of security personnel. Three men in sharp charcoal suits stepped into the room, their expressions grim and unreadable. At the front of the small detail stood Agent Miller—no relation to David—a senior investigator from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White-Collar Crime Division.
“Julian Vance?” Agent Miller called out, flashing a shiny silver badge that caught the harsh ballroom lighting. “And Lily Vance?”
Julian stepped in front of Lily instinctively, his body language shifting into defensive posture. “I’m Julian Vance. What is the meaning of this?”
Agent Miller stepped closer, his gaze sweeping over the ruined wedding decor, the stained dress, and the little girl sitting quietly in the corner. “We received an anonymous tip twenty minutes ago alleging massive corporate embezzlement, insider trading, and asset stripping originating from your accounts. I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask both of you to come down to the federal field office for immediate questioning.”

Julian’s hand drifted slowly to the inner pocket of his jacket, where the cold metal hard drive rested against his ribs. The trap had just sprung completely shut.
