Chapter 10 - The Ballroom Ambush

The figure standing in the doorway of the grand ballroom was shrouded in shadows, but the muzzle flash of the suppressed pistol was unmistakable as a bullet slammed into the wood paneling inches above Agent Miller’s head. Panic erupted instantly. The federal agents drew their sidearms with practiced precision, shoving Julian, Lily, and little Chloe behind a heavy marble pillar while returning fire into the dimly lit corridor.
“Get down!” Agent Miller roared, pressing his back against the stone pillar as the distinct sound of returning gunfire echoed off the high ceilings of the reception hall. Glass shattered from the overhead chandeliers, raining glittering shards across the polished floor.
Julian shielded Chloe with his entire body, pressing the little girl flat against the floorboards while keeping one hand clamped firmly over her ears to protect her from the deafening noise. His eyes darted frantically through the smoke and haze toward the entrance, trying to identify the shooter through the flashing muzzle lights.
“It’s Marcus!” Lily screamed over the thunderous cracks of gunfire, pointing a trembling finger toward the doorway where a familiar silhouette was ducking back behind the stone archway. “He didn’t leave! He was waiting for the extraction team to arrive!”
Julian’s blood ran cold. The double-crossing mercenary hadn't fled out of fear; he had been acting as a scout for the board’s armed cleanup crew all along. Every word Marcus had spoken about corporate restructuring and insider betrayal had been an elaborate psychological smokescreen designed to keep them cornered in the ballroom while the hit squad finished off their objective.
“Agent Miller!” Julian shouted across the barricade, his voice straining to be heard over the continuous exchange of gunfire. “The shooter at the door is Marcus Vance! He’s working directly with the board’s enforcement wing! There’s a secondary exit through the catering kitchens behind the altar!”
Agent Miller fired three precise rounds toward the doorway before ducking back behind cover. “We can’t take the kitchen exit! It’s a bottleneck! They’ll trap us in the narrow corridors!” Then he tapped his tactical radio frantically. “Air support, this is Miller! We are pinned down inside the main ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel! Need immediate extraction on the roof helipad now!”
“Negative, Miller!” a staticky, distorted voice crackled back through the radio earpiece. “ airspace over the district has been locked down by municipal transit emergency protocols! You are completely on your own!”
Julian’s heart sank. The conspiracy reached deeper than he had ever imagined—it had successfully paralyzed local law enforcement channels and emergency air corridors simultaneously. They were completely isolated, trapped in a burning building with a pack of wolves closing in from every direction.
Lily reached into the hidden pocket of her ruined white wedding gown and pulled out a heavy brass skeleton key, pressing it urgently into Julian’s palm. “The service elevator behind the dais,” she whispered fiercely. “It connects directly to the underground parking garage where my car is parked. It’s an old freight lift; the board’s tech team won't have it tied into their digital lockdown grid.”
Julian looked down at the brass key, then at Chloe, whose brave little face was streaked with soot and tears. He knew there was no other choice. With a sudden, explosive burst of adrenaline, Julian grabbed his daughter, pulled Lily up by her hand, and bolted toward the dais while Agent Miller and his men laid down a wall of covering fire.

As they reached the heavy velvet curtains behind the altar, the metal door of the service elevator slid open with a screech, revealing a dark, terrifying descent into the bowels of the building—and standing right inside the elevator car was Marcus, holding a cocked pistol pointed directly at Julian’s chest.
