Chapter 8 - The Federal Trap

The mention of an anonymous tip sent a cold shockwave through the room. Julian instantly realized the terrifying efficiency of the board’s counter-offensive; they hadn't just frozen his accounts and threatened his family—they had pre-emptively sicced federal authorities on him to ensure he was neutralized before he could even present his own evidence.

“An anonymous tip,” Julian repeated, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm as he maintained his protective stance in front of Lily. “Let me guess, Agent Miller. The tip conveniently arrived right after an emergency board meeting at Vance Global, and it outlined a comprehensive list of financial crimes that my company has supposedly been committing for months.”

Agent Miller didn't blink, his professional demeanor remaining as rigid as the badge pinned to his lapel. “Mr. Vance, I’m not at liberty to discuss the source of our intelligence. However, the financial anomalies flagged in the preliminary audit are severe enough to warrant a mandatory detainment for questioning. I advise you not to resist.”

Lily stepped out from behind Julian, her posture surprisingly steady despite the immense terror gripping her heart. She adjusted the folds of her elaborate white lace gown, her dark hair catching the light as she looked the federal agent dead in the eye.

“Agent Miller,” Lily said, her voice clear and commanding, carrying an unexpected authority that made even the seasoned investigator pause. “Before you cuff my husband and haul us both away on the word of an anonymous corporate puppet master, you might want to look at what is currently resting inside his jacket pocket.”

Julian glanced sideways at her, realizing instantly what she was doing. Without a word, he unbuttoned his suit jacket, reached into the inner pocket, and pulled out the sleek black hard drive, holding it up between two fingers like a detonator pin.

“What is that?” Agent Miller asked, taking a cautious half-step forward, his hand instinctively hovering near the service weapon at his hip.

“That is the master database containing every single encrypted communication, illegal money transfer, and extortion threat orchestrated by my board of directors to facilitate a hostile takeover of my company,” Julian stated flatly, his eyes locking onto the federal agent’s face. “They didn't just frame me, Agent. They framed my wife, they threatened my seven-year-old daughter, and they used your division as a blunt instrument to finish the job.”

The two armed agents standing behind Miller shifted uncomfortably, looking to their superior for guidance. Agent Miller stared at the small piece of metal for a long, agonizing moment, weighing the risk of executing a blind arrest against the explosive potential of uncovering an internal corporate conspiracy of massive proportions.

“If what you’re claiming is true, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller said slowly, lowering his hand away from his holster, “handing that drive over to us voluntarily is your only path out of this building in handcuffs.”

Julian looked down at the hard drive, then over at little Chloe, who was still watching them quietly from her chair, her innocent eyes blinking in the dim light. He knew that the moment he handed over the drive, they were stepping onto a legal battlefield with no guaranteed survival.

Before Julian could hand over the device, his phone—which he had retrieved from the table earlier—vibrated violently in his hand, displaying a live video feed from his home security system.
