Chapter 6 - The Unholy Vows

The heavy oak doors of the Grandview Ballroom swung outward, revealing a sea of flashing cameras, blinding stage lights, and three hundred faces turned upward in breathless anticipation. Julian felt a cold, phantom weight settle around his throat as he offered his rigid forearm to Lily. Her gloved fingers slipped smoothly against his sleeve, her touch feeling like the coil of a venomous snake resting against his skin. Beside them, little Mia was carried closely by a trusted family nanny who had been hastily bribed into compliance, her small face masked in terrified silence.

"Smile, darling," Lily whispered through teeth clenched in a pristine, bridal grin, her voice carrying a venomous undertone meant only for his ears. "Remember, one false move, and Marcus sends the payload."

Julian stared straight ahead, navigating the polished marble aisle as if walking toward a guillotine. The string quartet soared into the traditional chorus, but to Julian, the music sounded like a cacophony of breaking glass and mocking laughter. Every face in the crowd blurred into a nameless, faceless mass of ignorance. They were sipping expensive champagne, laughing, and celebrating a union built upon murder, corporate theft, and unimaginable blackmail.

As they reached the altar, the elderly officiating minister smiled warmly, adjusting his reading glasses as he opened the velvet-bound ledger. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the joining of Julian and Lily in holy matrimony..."

Julian’s eyes scanned the front row, locking briefly onto Marcus Vance, who stood among the groomsmen with a smug, triumphant expression. Marcus casually tapped the breast pocket of his tuxedo, reminding Julian of the digital bomb waiting to detonate at a single keystroke. A cold sweat broke out across Julian’s back, soaking through his black fabric. He looked down at Lily’s outstretched hand, her diamond engagement ring sparkling obscenely under the crystal chandeliers.

"Do you, Julian, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the minister asked, his gentle voice cutting through the heavy silence of the cavernous hall.

Julian’s lips parted, the heavy truth resting on his tongue, ready to shatter the illusion before the entire city.
