Chapter 3 - The Echo of Betrayal

The synthetic audio filled the confined space with damning clarity. Lily’s voice, sharp and calculated, echoed from the smartphone speaker, discussing the logistics of a staged accident that had claimed David’s life. Julian stood frozen, the romantic music drifting faintly from the ballroom downstairs feeling like a cruel mockery of his reality. The man on the recording was someone Julian recognized instantly—Marcus Vance, his own corporate CFO and best man for the wedding. The pieces of a jigsaw puzzle he had refused to see for months suddenly slammed together with brutal precision.
"Marcus," Julian whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "You and Marcus planned this from the very beginning."
Lily stopped struggling, her chest heaving beneath the intricate lace as she realized denial was no longer an option. Her terrified expression hardened into a bitter, defiant smirk. "And what if we did, Julian? You were too busy playing the dutiful brother and successful CEO to notice anything. David was weak. He was going to ruin the family empire with his bleeding-heart ethics. We just... expedited his exit."
Mia covered her ears, letting out a sharp, heartbroken cry at the casual cruelty in Lily’s voice. "You killed my daddy! You're a monster!"
Julian felt a red mist cloud his vision. In one swift movement, he grabbed Lily by the upper arm, his grip bruisingly tight. "Where is Sarah? What did you do to her when she found out?"
"Sarah is exactly where she needs to be," Lily hissed, wincing in pain but refusing to break eye contact. "And if you call the police right now, Julian, you won't just lose a bride. Marcus has a dead-man switch set to release your corporate embezzlement files to the federal authorities in exactly ten minutes."
Julian froze, his hand slackening on her arm. He stared at her in utter disbelief. "You framed me for your crimes?"
"Insurance fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," Lily purred smoothly, adjusting her veil with trembling fingers. "We share a bed, Julian. Legally, our finances are already intertwined. You go down, I go down. But if we walk out those double doors and say 'I do,' we become husband and wife. Legally, a spouse cannot be compelled to testify against their partner."

Before Julian could process the monstrous trap closing around him, the heavy oak door creaked open further, and Marcus Vance stepped into the room wearing his groomsman tuxedo.
