Chapter 12 - The Reckoning in the Dark

The fixer cursed loudly, swinging his elbow backward and catching Julian squarely in the ribs. Julian grunted, the impact driving the air from his lungs, but he refused to release his grip. He slammed the man’s head against the unyielding concrete floor until the struggling body went entirely limp. Breathing heavily, Julian scrambled to his feet, coughing as he grabbed the ring of iron keys from the floor.

He rushed to the reinforced steel door, his hands trembling violently as he tried key after key until one finally caught in the heavy mechanical lock. With a sharp twist, the bolt retracted with a loud metallic clank. Julian threw the door open, swinging his phone’s flashlight into the damp, windowless cell.

Curled up in the far corner against the cold stone wall was Sarah. Her face was pale, hollowed out by months of hiding, malnourishment, and absolute terror. Her clothes were torn and stained, a haunting shadow of the vibrant woman she used to be. Hearing the door open, she flinched violently, throwing her arms over her head to protect herself.

"Sarah," Julian choked out, his voice breaking as he dropped to his knees beside her. "Sarah, it's me. It's Julian."

Sarah slowly lowered her arms, blinking against the harsh glare of the flashlight. Her bloodshot eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she stared at his soot-stained tuxedo jacket and ruffled shirt. "Julian? What... what are you doing here? Where is Lily? The wedding..."

"The wedding is over," Julian said softly, gently wrapping his trembling arms around her fragile frame and pulling her close. "Marcus and Lily are arrested. You're safe now. I promise you, you're safe."

Sarah began to sob, the long-suppressed trauma finally breaking through her defenses as she buried her face in his shoulder. But amid her weeping, her hands gripped his lapels with terrifying urgency.

"Julian, you don't understand," she whispered frantically, her voice trembling so hard he could barely catch the words. "Marcus didn't just want the company. David didn't just stumble onto insurance fraud. They found something buried in the corporate archives—something about our father's past."

Before Julian could process the weight of her confession, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the dark corridor behind them.
