Chapter 2 - The Crimson Reflection

The silence inside the bridal suite became absolute, heavy enough to crush bone. Julian’s thumb hovered over the glowing screen of the smartphone, his knuckles turning stark white against the black fabric of his tuxedo cuff. The image displayed a dimly lit hotel room, a cluttered bedside table, and two figures entwined in a compromising embrace. Even with the soft focus, Julian recognized the distinctive gold signet ring on the man's hand. It was his own ring. And the woman pressed against him in the reflection was not Lily. It was his late brother’s grieving widow, Sarah, who had vanished from their lives six months ago under deeply suspicious circumstances.

"Where did you get this, Mia?" Julian asked, his voice disturbingly calm, a terrifying contrast to the violent trembling of his jaw.

"I found it in Mommy’s old velvet jewelry box in the attic," Mia whispered, burying her face in the folds of Lily's white lace dress, though Lily violently shoved her away. "Mommy left it behind before she went away. She said... she said Aunt Lily was the reason she had to run."

Lily stumbled backward, her manicured fingers clawing at the delicate lace neckline of her wedding gown as if trying to rip away an invisible collar. "She’s lying, Julian! Sarah was unstable, she was paranoid, she doctored those photos to ruin us! You know what she was like after David died. She couldn't stand the thought of us being happy together!"

"Liar!" Mia sobbed louder, her small hands clenching into fists. "Mommy never lied to me! She said the bad people wanted to take everything away!"

Julian slowly raised his eyes from the phone screen, fixing a cold, piercing stare on the woman he was supposed to marry in less than twenty minutes. The warmth that had defined their relationship for the past two years evaporated into thin air, replaced by a chilling realization that he had invited a predator into his home. He tapped the screen, and a recorded voice note began to play, filling the silent room with a chilling conversation between Lily and an unidentified man discussing an insurance payout.

"Turn that off!" Lily screamed, launching herself at Julian with the desperation of a cornered animal.

Julian sidestepped her effortlessly, holding the phone high out of her reach as the audio continued to play.
