Chapter 13 - The Echo from the Past

Julian whipped his head around, flashing his phone light down the dark corridor. Standing at the entrance of the basement stairwell was a tall, unfamiliar figure silhouetted against the dim emergency lights. The man wore a tailored vintage trench coat and held a heavy, silenced pistol pointed directly at Julian’s chest. The stranger’s face was half-hidden in shadow, but the sharp glint of a familiar family signet ring caught the dim light of the corridor. It was an identical ring to the one Julian wore, and the one belonging to his deceased father.
"End of the line, little brother," a gravelly, deeply familiar voice echoed down the stone hall, a voice that Julian hadn't heard in over a decade—a voice belonging to a man declared legally dead in a plane crash twenty years ago.
Sarah screamed, pressing herself deeper against the cold stone wall as the figure stepped forward into the dim light. The man's face bore an uncanny, chilling resemblance to Julian’s own reflection, though lined with age and hardened by a lifetime of calculated deception.
"David...?" Julian whispered, the word escaping his lips like a forbidden curse as his mind completely rejected the impossible reality standing before him. "No. That's impossible. You're dead. We buried an empty casket!"
The man chuckled darkly, lowering the silenced pistol just an inch while maintaining a lethal grip. "Death is such a convenient corporate strategy, Julian. Ask our father. Or better yet, ask Lily, who was merely a pawn in a game much larger than you could ever possibly comprehend."
Julian stood up slowly, putting himself between the armed stranger and Sarah, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "You... you orchestrated the entire thing? You let David take the fall? You staged your own death to bleed the company dry?"
"I built this empire from the ground up," the older man snapped, his voice suddenly dripping with venomous entitlement. "David had a weak conscience, just like you. He was going to expose the offshore accounts that fund our entire family legacy. So, we improvised. Marcus was just my cleaner. Lily was my insurance policy to keep you distracted."
Sarah shook her head furiously from the corner, reaching into her torn pocket and pulling out a small, encrypted data drive. "He's lying, Julian! The offshore accounts aren't family wealth—they belong to the victims your father defrauded forty years ago!"

The older man raised the pistol, his eyes locking onto Sarah with murderous intent. "Hand over the drive, Sarah, or I finish what Marcus started."
