Chapter 11 - The Coastal Safehouse

The salt air whipped violently through Julian’s hair as he slammed the door of his rental car, his tires kicking up gravel against the dark, desolate coastal road. The abandoned weather station stood on a jagged cliffside, its rusted corrugated metal groaning under the relentless force of the ocean winds crashing against the rocks below. No lights flickered from the windows, but a single black sedan was parked haphazardly near the rusted iron gate—the exact car Marcus’s associates used for covert transport.
Julian killed the engine, stepping out into the freezing night. He reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers brushing against the heavy metal casing of his brother’s hardware token. Every instinct screamed at him to wait for backup, to let the federal agents handle the perimeter, but time was a luxury he no longer possessed. Lily’s parting words echoed relentlessly in his mind: You don't even know what Sarah really took from the safe.
He crept toward the rusted side entrance of the weather station, keeping low against the concrete foundation. The wind masked the sound of his footsteps as he slipped through a cracked, rotting wooden door into the pitch-black interior. The smell of damp concrete, old salt, and lingering cigarette smoke filled his lungs.
Using the dim flashlight on his phone, Julian navigated a labyrinth of rusted industrial equipment and empty storage crates. Faint sounds echoed from the basement stairwell ahead—a low, muffled cough followed by the sound of a heavy metal door being unlatched.
Julian crept closer, pressing his back against the peeling paint of the corridor wall. Peering around the concrete corner, he saw a disheveled man in a heavy utility jacket fumbling with a ring of keys outside a reinforced steel holding cell. It was one of Marcus’s primary fixers, tasked with tying up loose ends before the federal dragnet closed in completely.

The fixer raised a heavy steel pipe, preparing to strike the person locked inside the cell. Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward from the shadows, tackling the man hard against the concrete floor.
