Chapter 9

The long corridor of the estate was lined with ancestral portraits, their painted eyes seeming to follow Clara as she walked arm-in-arm with Julian. The distant murmur of chattering guests drifted up from the grand hall below, a low, festive hum that contrasted sharply with the grim determination in the bride's heart. Victoria walked ahead, her white dress rustling softly against the polished oak floorboards, humming a wordless tune that sounded suspiciously like a lullaby Clara’s mother used to hum when she was a little girl.

Clara tightened her grip on Julian’s arm, her heels clicking in steady rhythm against the wood. Every step felt like walking through water, resistance building with each passing second, yet her stride did not falter. The locket rested heavily in her palm, its metal casing growing warm against her skin.

"Are you ready?" Julian asked quietly, casting a sideways glance down at her as they reached the landing at the top of the grand staircase.

"I have to be," Clara replied, her voice firm, stripped of all previous hesitation. "If I turn back now, I'll never be free."

Below them, the sprawling ballroom and grand hall were filled with floral arrangements of white roses and eucalyptus. Men in sharp tuxedos held crystal flutes of champagne, and women in pastel evening gowns chatted animatedly near the archways. Standing near the entrance to the garden terrace was Clara’s father, Arthur, wearing a bespoke navy suit and greeting a prominent business associate with a practiced, charming smile that reached his eyes only when convenient. He looked every bit the successful, benevolent patriarch.

As Clara and Julian descended the first few steps of the grand staircase, the ambient noise in the hall began to taper off. A few heads turned upward, admiring the traditional descent of the bride. But Arthur looked up and froze, his smile faltering for a fraction of a second as he took in Clara’s pale, determined expression and the absence of her bridal veil, which was now draped casually over her shoulder.

Arthur took a step toward the base of the staircase, his brow furrowing in irritation. He expected perfection today, not a bride walking down the stairs out of order and looking like she had just walked through a storm.
