Chapter 1

The green-walled preparation room smelled faintly of burnt hairspray and damp gardenias. Clara clutched the vintage gold locket so hard that the ornate brass edges bit painfully into her pale palm. Her long-sleeved white lace wedding dress, usually a symbol of innocent joy, felt like a tightening straightjacket against her ribs. Tears tracked hot and fast down her powdered cheeks, cutting through foundation as she stared into the gilded vanity mirror. Julian stood frozen near the door, his black tuxedo immaculate, his bowtie slightly askew from the sudden panic. Little Victoria stood beside him, clutching her miniature white bouquet with an eerie, unblinking stillness that didn't belong to a six-year-old child.
"What are you doing?" Julian finally asked, his voice cracking with disbelief as he looked between Clara and the silent girl.
Clara whipped around, her floral crown slipping precariously over her brow. The distress in her eyes was raw and unfiltered, a sudden storm breaking across a sunlit morning. She thrust the locket forward, the golden chain dangling erratically.

"She stole it! That was my mother’s locket!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the hardwood floor and shattering the fragile peace of the bridal suite.
Julian blinked, taking a slow step backward. The accusation hung heavily in the air, ridiculous yet terrifying in its absolute conviction. He looked down at Victoria, who simply stared back at him with wide, clear blue eyes, completely unfazed by the sudden outburst. Julian knew every detail of this room, every detail of the morning's schedule, yet reality seemed to fracture right before his eyes. He had to calm Clara down before the guests heard the commotion from the courtyard below. He crouched down to meet Victoria’s eye level, ignoring Clara’s ragged breathing for a crucial fraction of a second. The atmosphere was stifling, charged with an unspoken history that none of the adults wanted to confront, yet here it was, spilling out on a wedding day meant for happy beginnings. Julian placed a gentle, reassuring hand on the little girl's velvet-clad shoulder, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
