Chapter 15

The final "I do" echoed softly through the sunlit garden, followed by a burst of gentle applause and warm cheers from the gathered guests. Julian pulled Clara close, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing a deep, tender kiss to her lips as the string quartet swelled into a triumphant, joyful cadence.

There were no more secrets locked away in cedar chests, no more forged documents hidden in gold lockets, and no more ghosts wandering through forbidden corridors. The past had been brought into the light, judged, and forgiven, leaving only the clean, open expanse of a future built entirely on truth.

As the guests moved toward the reception tables to share in the celebration, Clara and Julian lingered for a moment near the edge of the terrace, looking out over the manicured lawn. Little Victoria was already running across the green grass, chasing a stray butterfly with the carefree abandon of a normal, happy child.

Clara reached into her bodice, retrieving the vintage gold locket. She popped it open, looking at the faded photograph of her mother. The image no longer brought a pang of suffocating guilt; instead, it felt like a quiet blessing, a reminder of a mother's fierce, uncompromising love that had broken through the walls of deception to save her daughter’s soul.

Julian placed his hand over Clara’s, gently pressing the locket shut. "Are you keeping it?" he asked softly.

"Always," Clara said, smiling as she slipped the golden chain around her neck, letting it rest where it belonged—visible, open, and free.

She looked toward the French doors of the green-walled dressing room, noticing that they stood wide open, inviting the fresh breeze to sweep through every corner of the estate. There were no locked doors left in her life, and as she took Julian’s hand to join their friends at the celebration, Clara took one final, deep, unbroken breath of the afternoon air, stepping forward into a life where the truth was no longer a burden, but a key to absolute freedom.
