Chapter 14

Ten minutes later, the string quartet struck up a new melody—not the traditional, somber wedding march, but a bright, hopeful acoustic piece that drifted softly across the garden terrace. The guests stood in their seats under the white silk marquee, their expressions a mix of lingering shock and deep, empathetic admiration as they watched the bride approach.

Clara walked down the aisle alone, refusing the traditional hand-off that had once symbolized a transfer of ownership from one flawed man to another. She walked with her head held high, the long sleeves of her white lace dress catching the afternoon sunlight. Her floral crown sat proudly upon her blonde hair, and the vintage gold locket was tucked safely inside the bodice of her gown, resting directly against her beating heart.

Waiting at the end of the aisle stood Julian, dressed in his immaculate black tuxedo, his bowtie now straight, his eyes fixed entirely on Clara with a love that felt absolute and unshakeable. There was no pretense between them anymore, no hidden closets, no buried ghosts.

As Clara reached the altar, Julian stepped forward to meet her, taking her hands in his own. The warmth of his skin grounded her, anchoring her firmly in the brilliant, unshielded reality of the present moment.

"You look breathtaking," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"I feel breathtaking," Clara replied, smiling through eyes that shimmered with happy tears.

The officiant, a kind-eyed man who had witnessed the morning's upheaval with quiet grace, cleared his throat gently and smiled. "Dearly beloved, and those who have traveled a hard road to reach this place today..." he began, his voice carrying clearly over the quiet whispers of the garden.

In the front row, little Victoria sat with her hands folded neatly over her white bouquet, a serene, contented smile gracing her lips as she watched the two adults finally make their vows in the pure light of day.
