Chapter 12

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second as they cut through the quiet morning air outside the grand estate. The high-pitched wails echoed off the brick facade, signaling the arrival of the authorities that Julian had quietly summoned while Clara gathered her courage in the green-walled room.

Arthur stood frozen at the foot of the grand staircase, his hands trembling at his sides. The guests had backed away, forming a wide circle around the stairs, whispering behind cupped hands and staring in sheer disbelief at the unfolding drama. No one dared to approach, and no one offered a word of comfort to the disgraced patriarch.

Clara stood tall, her shoulders squared beneath the delicate lace of her wedding gown. The floral crown sat straight upon her head, and for the first time all day, she felt light, as if gravity itself had loosened its grip on her body. She looked down at the gold locket in her hand, snapping it shut with a satisfying, clean click.

"You don't have to watch this, Clara," Julian murmured softly, leaning down to speak near her ear. "You can wait in the library."

"No," Clara replied, shaking her head with quiet resolve. "I ran away from this for three years. I can watch the end of it."

Two police officers in crisp uniforms pushed open the heavy oak double doors of the grand hall, their boots clicking purposefully against the marble floor as they strode inside. They scanned the silent, tense room before zeroing in on Arthur, who stood pale and deflated near the stairs.

"Arthur Sterling?" the lead officer asked, his hand resting near his duty belt.

Arthur could not find the voice to answer. He simply gave a microscopic nod, his eyes fixed on the floorboards where his life’s deceptions had finally unraveled.

The officer stepped forward, reading him his rights in a brisk, professional tone that sounded entirely detached from the heavy emotional drama of the room. As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists, Clara felt a physical weight lift from her chest, a long-held breath finally exhaled into the open air.

Victoria walked over, gently tugging at the edge of Clara’s lace skirt. Clara looked down, offering the little girl a soft, genuine smile—the first real smile she had worn all day.
