Chapter 6

Julian closed the service door firmly and walked back across the room, kneeling beside Clara on the hardwood floor. He ignored the pristine fabric of his black tuxedo pants brushing against the dusty rug. He took Clara’s cold, trembling hands in his own, pressing his thumbs against her knuckles to ground her.

"Clara, listen to me," Julian said, his tone urgent yet deeply compassionate. "We need to talk about what really happened three years ago. You’ve carried this secret, whatever it is, for too long. Is that why you locked the locket away?"

Clara stared down at their joined hands, her lower lip trembling. The tears had slowed, leaving a heavy, exhausted silence in their wake. She swallowed hard, her throat working painfully.

"I didn't lose her to an illness, Julian," Clara confessed, the words tumbling out in a rush as if the dam had finally burst. "The official story... the heart attack... it was a lie to protect our family's name."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He had known Clara for five years, yet he realized in that single moment how many locked doors existed in her past. He maintained his steady grip on her hands, offering silent, unwavering support. "What really happened, Clara?"

"She found out about the embezzlement," Clara whispered, her eyes welling up with fresh tears as she finally met Julian’s gaze. "My father’s business was failing, and he was siphoning funds from the charity foundation my mother ran. When she threatened to go to the police and expose him, they had a terrible argument on the stairs. I was standing right at the bottom. I saw him push her."

Julian felt a chilling wave of shock wash over him. The image of the sweet, smiling woman in the locket clashed violently with the dark reality Clara was describing. "Your father?" Julian breathed, the words barely audible.

Clara nodded miserably. "And I stayed silent. To protect him. To protect our social standing. I helped him cover it up, making it look like a sudden medical emergency. When my mother died, she was wearing this locket. My father tried to throw it away, but I took it, hid it, and locked it away because every time I looked at it, I heard her screaming on the stairs."
