Chapter 6: The Spider's Dinner

By Thursday evening, the Vance family struck their first visible blow. Julian Vance hosted an exclusive charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum, inviting the city's political elite, federal prosecutors, and top industrial magnates.
Gabriel arrived alone, clad in an immaculate black tuxedo that contrasted starkly with the ink showing above his stiff collar. Whispers rippled through the marble ballroom as he stepped onto the red carpet.
Elena glided toward him, radiant in crimson velvet, her father Julian walking closely behind her. Julian was a silver-haired patriarch with predatory blue eyes and a politician's booming laugh.
"Gabriel, my boy!" Julian boomed, clasping Gabriel’s shoulder with aggressive familiarity. "You look formidable as always. Elena tells me you’ve been working miracles organizing Marcus’s chaotic harbor records."
"Order is necessary for survival, Julian," Gabriel replied calmly, looking straight into the older man's cold eyes.
"Quite right," Julian chuckled smoothly, leaning in closer. "Which is why I must commend your foresight. Handing over those manifests to the authorities takes courage. Though... sometimes records are misinterpreted by overzealous prosecutors. It would be a tragedy if your good name was tarnished by Marcus’s old indiscretions."
The threat was veiled, but razor-sharp. Julian was telling Gabriel that the forged logs Elena had stolen from the vault were already being prepared to frame Gabriel for the contaminated harbor dumping.
"I trust the truth has a way of defending itself," Gabriel said softly.
Elena offered a sweet, patronizing smile. "Truth is often subjective, Gabe. Power decides which narrative survives."
Gabriel raised his champagne glass slightly. "Then let us see which narrative stands when the storm hits tomorrow morning."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, sensing an undercurrent of defiance he couldn't quite calculate. But before he could press further, Gabriel nodded politely and walked into the sea of guests, moving with the quiet grace of a man who had already laid the charges beneath their ivory tower.
