Chapter 3: Shadows on the Ledger

By midnight, Elena had retreated to her suite, convinced Gabriel was none the wiser. Gabriel descended to the sub-basement security hub where banks of monitors cast an icy blue glow over Leo’s tired face.

"We traced the transmitter's relay frequency," Leo said, typing rapidly on a mechanical keyboard. "It isn’t transmitting to Elena’s phone. It routes directly to an offshore IP bouncing through shell servers in Panama."

Gabriel rested both palms on the steel console. "Who owns the server pool?"

"Vance Global Logistics," Leo replied grimly. "Specifically, Julian Vance. Her father."

Gabriel’s jaw set. The puzzle pieces began interlocking with ruthless clarity. Marcus hadn’t died from an accidental collapse at the harbor redevelopment site. Marcus had discovered that Vance Global was laundering illicit industrial waste shipments through municipal shipping lanes. Marcus had threatened to whistleblow—and Julian Vance had crushed him beneath tons of falling steel.

"They didn't just want Marcus out of the way," Gabriel muttered, piecing together the terrifying scope. "They wanted the Thorne network to absorb the liability. Elena wasn't sent to marry me for power. She was sent to make me the fall guy when federal investigators inevitably raid the shipping manifests."

"And Emma?" Leo asked quietly.

"Marcus left sixty percent of his voting shares directly to Emma in a sealed custodial trust under my name," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave into dangerous territory. "If I go to prison or die, custody defaults to my legal spouse. Elena."

The cruelty of the scheme was breathtaking. They intended to seize the foundation, sell off Marcus’s clean docks to cover their hazardous waste trails, and toss a six-year-old orphan into the cold gears of corporate bureaucracy.

"Mr. Thorne, what are your orders?" Leo asked.

Gabriel straightened up, rolling the sleeves of his crisp white shirt past the intricate lion tattoos winding up his forearms.

"We don't run," Gabriel said coldly. "We feed them the ledger they've been begging to steal. Give Julian Vance enough rope to hang his entire empire."
