Chapter 2: Poison in Velvet

Elena Vance sat in the formal dining room, bathed in warm chandelier light that made her diamond bracelet sparkle like fractured ice. She wore an emerald silk gown that mirrored her sharp green eyes. When Gabriel walked in, a practiced, radiant smile curved her lips.

"You're late, darling," she said softly, extending a manicured hand across the mahogany table. "The chef was worried the Chilean sea bass would go cold."

Gabriel took her hand, brushing his lips against her knuckles without letting his pulse quicken. The transmitter remained in his suit pocket, live and feeding into the surveillance trap Leo had just rerouted.

"Matters at the dock required my attention," Gabriel said, pulling out his chair. "Marcus’s foundation assets are finally clearing probate."

A flicker of intense calculation flashed behind Elena’s eyes before she covered it with sympathetic warmth. "It must be exhausting carrying his legacy alone. If you let my father's legal team take over the foundation, it would relieve so much burden from your shoulders."

"I made a promise to Marcus," Gabriel answered evenly, cutting into his meal with surgical precision. "His work with the city’s youth programs remains independent. Emma’s future is tied to that foundation."

Elena chuckled, swirling her vintage red wine. "Emma is a child, Gabriel. She needs stability, not a corporate trust fund managed by sentimental guilt."

"Sentiment is what keeps us human, Elena," Gabriel countered smoothly.

"In business, sentiment is a fatal flaw," she replied, raising her glass in a silent toast.

Gabriel watched her sip the wine. Underneath the table, his phone vibrated with a single encrypted ping: *Emma is off-site. Highway clear.*

The board was set. Elena thought she was playing an easy mark driven by grief, but Gabriel had grown up in the rough wards of the harbor before building his empire. He knew how predators moved in the dark.

"Tell me, Elena," Gabriel said, leaning back into his leather chair, fixing her with an unblinking gaze. "When was the last time you wound a clock?"

Elena paused, her wine glass halting mid-air. Her smile tightened. "I beg your pardon?"

"Just reminiscing," Gabriel said softly. "Old mechanisms need careful maintenance. Otherwise, they tick out of control."
