Chapter 10: Sifting the Ashes

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance corporate empire collapsed like a house of cards. The morning newspapers carried front-page photos of Julian Vance in handcuffs, his head bowed against the flashing cameras, while Elena was escorted into federal custody without bail.

Gabriel spent the weekend in Marcus’s old office down at the harbor. The room had remained untouched since the tragedy—blueprints spread across drafting tables, hard hats resting on hooks, and a framed photograph of Marcus holding Emma on the day she took her first steps.

Leo walked in, holding a leather-bound folder. "The U.S. Attorney officially cleared the Thorne Group of all involvement. The court has also ratified Marcus’s will without contest."

"And the foundation?" Gabriel asked.

"One hundred percent secure," Leo replied with a rare smile. "Emma is the sole heir. You are confirmed as her legal guardian until she reaches majority."

Gabriel looked out the high window at the harbor cranes swinging steadily against the blue sky. The workers were back on site, building the community recreation center and vocational school that Marcus had dreamed of creating for the city's underprivileged families.

"Thank you, Leo," Gabriel said softly. "Make sure everyone on Marcus's old crew gets their full benefits and hazardous pay bonuses doubled."

"Consider it done, Mr. Thorne."

As Leo departed, Gabriel walked over to Marcus's desk. He picked up the small brass compass Marcus always kept as a paperweight. On the back, an inscription was engraved in worn script: *“A true compass points toward those you protect.”*

Gabriel pocketed the compass. For years, he had believed his purpose was simply to conquer the market, to accumulate wealth as armor against a cruel world. But Marcus had taught him something greater: real strength wasn't about building higher walls; it was about building a sanctuary for those who couldn't protect themselves.
