Chapter 11: The Whistle of the Train

Two weeks later, Gabriel drove upstate to the greenhouse. The autumn air was crisp, turning the surrounding oak and maple forests into blazing canopies of crimson and gold.

When he stepped onto the porch of the farmhouse, Emma ran out with a wide grin, wearing a knitted wool sweater Clara had made for her.

"Uncle Gabe! Look what I found!" she shouted, holding up an abandoned bird's nest woven from twigs, pine needles, and strands of bright yarn.

Gabriel knelt down, carefully examining the delicate structure. "That's an architectural masterpiece, Emma. The mother bird must have worked very hard to keep her babies safe."

"She did," Emma said proudly. "Aunt Clara said birds travel far away when it gets cold, but they always remember where home is."

Clara walked out onto the porch, carrying two steaming mugs of apple cider. She handed one to Gabriel, watching the child chase a butterfly across the grass.

"She hasn't asked about Elena once," Clara said quietly.

"Kids are more perceptive than we think," Gabriel murmured. "They can feel when someone's heart isn't real."

"And what about you, Gabriel?" Clara asked, studying the tired lines around her brother's eyes. "Are you going back to the tower?"

Gabriel looked at his hands—the ink, the calluses, the marks of a life spent fighting for every inch of survival.

"The tower is just concrete and steel," Gabriel said. "I'm stepping down as CEO. Leo will handle daily operations. I'm focusing full-time on running Marcus's foundation."

Clara smiled warmly, resting her head on his shoulder. "Marcus would be so proud of you, Gabe."

"I just want to make sure his little bird gets to fly," Gabriel said, taking a sip of the warm cider as the afternoon sun bathed the meadow in gold.
