Chapter 4: The Painted Trap

At dawn, Gabriel returned to the penthouse office. He deliberately left the grandfather clock ajar and spread a set of modified shipping manifests across his desk, marked with red confidential stamps.
When Elena entered holding two porcelain cups of espresso, her eyes immediately darted toward the open mahogany desk.
"You look exhausted, Gabe," she purred, setting a cup near his elbow and resting her hands on his shoulders, pressing a kiss to his temple. "Did you stay up working?"
"Just finalizing the harbor manifests," Gabriel said, rubbing his eyes with convincing fatigue. "Marcus kept two sets of books. I found the master drive containing the unredacted logistics logs for the South Bay terminals."
Elena’s fingers tightened imperceptibly against his shoulders. "Did you? Where are they?"
"Stored on an encrypted cold-storage key inside the office safe," Gabriel said, pointing toward the heavy wall vault concealed behind an oil painting of the Hudson River. "I’m handing them over to federal auditors on Friday. Once the audit clears, our wedding goes ahead without any lingering shadows."
"Of course," Elena said, her voice smooth as glass, though a subtle tremor betrayed her adrenaline. "Friday is perfect. You're doing the honorable thing, as always."
Gabriel smiled faintly, looking up at her porcelain face. For months, he had mistaken her cold poise for strength. Now, seeing through the veil, he saw only the hollow vanity of someone who measured human lives in profit margins.
"I have meetings downtown until five," Gabriel announced, standing up and grabbing his navy jacket. "Take your time here. The penthouse is yours."
As the private elevator doors closed behind him, Gabriel pulled out his tablet. The office camera feed came alive instantly.
Within ninety seconds of his departure, Elena walked swiftly to the desk, pulled a cloning device from her designer handbag, and approached the vault.

"Hook, line, and sinker," Gabriel murmured to himself as the elevator descended smoothly toward the lobby.
