Chapter 8 - The Shadow from the Past

Arthur stood near the entrance of the diner for a fraction of a second, his polished oxfords clicking rhythmically against the checkered linoleum floor as he began to walk toward the back. His dark hair was slicked back with military precision, and a faint, cruel smirk played at the corners of his thin lips.

Clara froze, paralyzed by a terror far more visceral than the one Jax had inspired earlier that afternoon. Jax’s anger had been rooted in grief and humanity; Arthur’s presence was pure, calculated possession.

"Mommy? Who is that?" Lily asked, shrinking back against the vinyl seat as she noticed the fear radiating from her mother.

"Stay behind me, Lily," Clara whispered fiercely, her voice trembling as she shoved the leather journal deep into her oversized handbag, zipping it shut with frantic speed.

Arthur slid effortlessly into the booth opposite Clara without being invited, planting his elbows on the table and folding his manicured hands together. He smelled faintly of expensive cologne and cold rain. He didn't look at Lily at all; his predatory gaze was locked entirely on Clara’s terrified eyes.

"Did you really think you could vanish into thin air, Clara?" Arthur asked, his voice low, smooth, and laced with a terrifyingly calm menace. "A woman driving a beat-up sedan with a stolen child crossing state lines leaves a very predictable trail if you know who to pay off."

"She’s not stolen," Clara hissed, leaning forward and slamming her palm against the table, making the plastic napkin holder rattle. "She’s my daughter! Leave us alone, Arthur. It’s over!"

Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle that didn't reach his cold eyes. He reached across the table, his fingers brushing menacingly close to Clara’s wrist before she jerked her arm away.

"Your daughter?" Arthur raised an eyebrow, a mocking smile twisting his mouth. "Let’s not play games, Clara. We both know whose blood runs in that little girl’s veins. And we both know what kind of messy paperwork you forged to keep her hidden from me... and from her biological father."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. The realization hit her like a lightning bolt: Arthur didn't just want to control her; he knew the truth about Lily’s origins—and he was planning to use it as leverage to destroy them both.

Before Clara could form a response, the diner’s front door chimed a second time, announcing the arrival of another customer. A heavy set of boots stepped inside, followed by the familiar, low rumble of a familiar voice cutting through the tense air of the diner.

"I think the lady asked you to leave her alone, pal," a gruff voice growled from behind Arthur.
