Chapter 4 - The Confession on the Shoulder

The heavy thud of leather boots hitting the gravel outside Clara’s door sounded like a drumbeat of doom. Clara locked the power doors with a frantic jab of her elbow, though she knew a locked window wouldn't stop a man of his size if he truly wanted inside. She kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles ached.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The sound of knuckles rapping gently against the driver’s side window made her jump. She turned her head slowly. Jax was standing there, his expression devoid of anger, bearing only a tired, weathered vulnerability that completely disarmed her. He wasn't holding a weapon. His hands were empty, held up palms-upward in a gesture of absolute surrender.
Clara cracked the window down an inch, the cool mountain air rushing in, carrying the scent of pine and engine oil.
"What do you want from us?" Clara demanded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. "Just leave us alone! We didn't do anything to you!"
Jax crouched down so his face was level with the cracked window. In the dim light of dusk, the lines etched around his eyes looked deeper, mapping a landscape of profound, unending grief.
"I don't want to hurt you, Clara," Jax said quietly.
The sound of her name sent a fresh wave of ice water through her veins. She had never told him her name. She had never spoken to him at the gas station beyond a muttered apology. Her mouth opened in a silent gasp, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"How do you know who I am?" she whispered, the fight instantly draining out of her.
Jax stood back up, walking around to the front of the car and leaning against the hood, looking down at the license plate. When he spoke again, his voice carried the heavy weight of a terrible secret long kept in the dark.
"Because I’ve been looking at that license plate in my nightmares for three years," Jax said, his gaze piercing through the glass to meet hers. "That night at the crossroads diner... you were the one who pulled my little girl out of the burning truck. And then... you vanished."

Clara froze, the memories crashing over her like a tidal wave. The screech of metal, the roar of flames, the frantic search through the smoke, and the heavy bundle she had pulled from the wreckage—a bundle she thought was abandoned, a child she took to save, only to realize too late what she had unraveled.
