Chapter 10 - The Architect of the Wreck

The diner seemed to tilt sideways as Jax’s words echoed in Clara’s ears. The hum of the ancient refrigerator behind the counter buzzed like a dying insect in the suffocating silence. Clara stared at the biker, her lips parted in a silent plea for him to take it back, to tell her she had misheard him.
"What... what did you say?" Clara whispered, her voice barely a breath.
Jax leaned forward across the sticky laminate table, his dark eyes burning with a cold, absolute certainty. "You heard me, Clara. That accident wasn't a random patch of black ice on the highway. My truck didn't just veer off the mountain pass on its own." He reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a crumpled, yellowed police report enclosed in a plastic evidence sleeve, tossing it onto the table between them. "I spent three years tracking down the brake line forensics that the local authorities conveniently buried. The fittings were sheared clean with precision tools before I even turned the ignition."
Clara pulled the plastic sleeve toward her, her trembling fingers tracing the official seal of the state police. The report detailed mechanical sabotage—a hit designed to eliminate Jax and anyone riding with him.
"Arthur..." Clara gasped, the terrifying puzzle pieces finally snapping together in her mind. "He wanted you dead. Because... because I tried to leave him for you, didn't I?"
Jax nodded slowly, a dark shadow crossing his weathered face. "Before I met you, before that summer, Arthur was the silent investor in my garage. He found out I was helping you draft escape plans out of his estate. He threatened my family, and when I refused to back down, he arranged a permanent solution." Jax’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned blue. "He thought he killed my daughter in that crash. He thought he buried all of us."
"And when he realized Lily survived..." Clara’s voice trailed off, horror washing over her in a freezing wave. "When he found out I took her and raised her as my own... he didn't just want her back because of custody. He realized she was living proof of the crime he tried to cover up."
Lily, sensing the overwhelming distress radiating from the two adults, tugged gently on Clara’s sleeve. "Mommy, why are you crying? Are we in trouble?"
Clara forced a strained, heartbreaking smile, pulling Lily closer and burying her face in the child's braided pigtails. "No, sweet girl. Mommy’s just... getting something in her eye." She looked back up at Jax, her expression hardening with a fierce, protective resolve. "We can't run anymore, Jax. If we keep driving, he’ll just hunt us down in the next town, or the one after that. He has money, lawyers, and police in his pocket."
Jax reached across the table, his massive, calloused hand gently covering Clara’s shaking fingers. The touch was surprisingly tender, grounding her amidst the chaos.

"We aren't going to run anymore," Jax said softly, his voice carrying an unyielding strength. "We’re going to end this. Tonight."
