Chapter 12 - The Descent into the Estate

The cold night air hit Clara like a physical barrier as she stepped off the back of Jax’s motorcycle. The towering pines of the foothills swallowed the moonlight, casting long, skeletal shadows across the sprawling iron gates of Arthur’s winter lodge. True to Jax’s word, they had bypassed the main access road entirely, navigating a hidden dirt track that wound through the dense underbrush until they reached the mouth of the old drainage culvert.

The concrete pipe smelled of stagnant water, damp earth, and rust. Jax flicked on a small, heavy-duty tactical flashlight, the beam cutting through the gloom to reveal the narrow, sloping tunnel leading upward into the subterranean depths of the estate.

"Stay right behind me," Jax whispered, crouching down as he entered the culvert. "Watch your footing; the algae makes it slick."

Clara followed closely, the rough concrete scraping against her jacket as she squeezed through the tight space. Every breath tasted of cold dust. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but the paralyzing fear she had felt earlier had hardened into a sharp, unyielding resolve. She was no longer running; she was hunting the monster who had stolen her peace.

After what felt like an eternity of crawling through the dark, the culvert opened up into a dimly lit concrete basement filled with old wooden crates, discarded furniture, and the low, heavy hum of the estate’s backup generator. Jax slipped out of the pipe first, his massive frame blending seamlessly into the shadows as he scanned the room. He motioned for Clara to follow.

They crept toward a heavy metal door at the far end of the basement. Jax tried the handle; it clicked silently, yielding with smooth, well-oiled precision. He pushed it open just an inch, peering out into a carpeted hallway lined with wood-paneled walls and expensive oil paintings.

"Stairs are at the end of the hall," Jax whispered into Clara’s ear. "Arthur’s study is on the second floor overlooking the courtyard."

They moved with practiced stealth, stepping lightly over the plush carpet until they reached the grand staircase. The estate was eerily quiet, save for the distant ticking of a grandfather clock somewhere overhead. As they reached the second-floor landing, a warm strip of light spilled out from beneath a heavy mahogany double door at the end of the corridor.

Arthur’s voice drifted down the hallway, speaking in low, clipped tones into a telephone.

"—I want every state trooper on the highway grid checked by morning," Arthur was saying coldly. "She has nowhere to run. Bring her and the child to me, and make sure the biker is disposed of quietly."

May you like

Clara froze, her blood running cold. She looked at Jax. The biker didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, raised his heavy boot, and kicked the mahogany doors wide open with a resounding crash that shattered the quiet of the lodge.
