Chapter 11 - The Plan in the Shadows

The parking lot outside the diner was pitch-black, illuminated only by the buzzing, sickly pink glow of the Owl Creek sign. Inside, huddled over a stained booth in the far corner, Clara and Jax mapped out a desperate gamble. The leather journal lay open between them, serving as a makeshift notebook where Jax hastily sketched a crude map of Arthur’s heavily fortified estate tucked away in the foothills three miles north.
"He won't stay at a hotel," Jax murmured, his pencil scratching rapidly against the paper. "A man like Arthur needs his control, his private security, his safe room. He’ll be holed up at his winter lodge off Route 9."
"How do we even get in?" Clara asked, her eyes darting nervously toward the front windows. "He’ll have guards at the gates, security cameras, motion sensors. We’ll be caught before we even clear the perimeter."
Jax paused, looking up from the sketch. He reached into his vest and pulled out a small, heavy brass key, laying it gently on the table next to the map.
"Because we aren't going through the front gate," Jax said, a grim smirk touching his lips. "That lodge was built by my grandfather thirty years ago before Arthur bought it out from under our family during the bankruptcy. There’s a drainage culvert running beneath the east wing that leads straight into the basement. It’s narrow, dark, and filthy... but nobody monitors it."
Clara stared at the key, then up at the towering, tattooed biker who had transformed from a terrifying stranger at a gas station pump into an unexpected ally in a war for survival. She thought of Lily, sleeping fitfully on the booth’s vinyl cushion, her small chest rising and falling in rhythm. There was no other choice. If they didn't strike back tonight, Arthur would eventually corner them, strip Lily away, and erase their existence entirely.
"What about Lily?" Clara whispered, her voice catching in her throat. "I can't take her into a place like that."
"She stays here," a voice interrupted from behind them.
Clara and Jax spun around. The tired waitress from earlier was standing by their table, holding a fresh pot of coffee. Her expression was neutral, but her eyes held a fierce, understanding spark. She looked down at Lily, then back up at Clara.
"I’ve got a niece about her age sleeping in the back room," the waitress said quietly, setting the coffee pot down. "She can sleep on the cot until you get back. Nobody comes into this diner after midnight anyway. I’ll keep her safe."
Clara stared at the woman, a well of overwhelming gratitude swelling in her chest. "Are you sure? We might not come back."
The waitress reached out, patting Clara’s hand with a weathered, gentle touch. "Honey, men like Arthur have been running roughshod over this county for too long. Go finish it."
Jax stood up, tossing a crumpled twenty-dollar bill onto the table to cover the untouched coffee. He pulled his leather helmet on, his dark eyes locking onto Clara’s.

"Let’s ride," Jax said.
