Chapter 5 - The Secret in the Smoke

The memory hit Clara with the force of a physical blow, blurring the edges of the dark forest around her. Three years ago, the world had smelled of scorched rubber and spilled gasoline. She had been running from an abusive past, her own life in tatters, when she stumbled upon the fiery wreckage of a pickup truck overturned on a desolate stretch of highway.

In the panic, driven by an instinct she couldn't explain, she had reached into the backseat of the burning vehicle. She thought she was saving a stray infant left behind by fleeing parents. It was only miles down the road, when the adrenaline finally wore off and she looked down at the sleeping child in her arms—a child wearing a purple unicorn t-shirt—that she realized the terrible truth. The mother had perished in the front seat, trapped by the steering column, while Jax, the father, had been thrown clear into the ditch, unconscious and bleeding out.

"I didn't steal her," Clara whispered through the cracked window, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "When the fire department arrived... everything was engulfed. I panicked. I had a newborn of my own, and yours... yours looked so small, so alone. I thought you were dead, Jax. The news said nobody survived the front cab."

Jax listened, his jaw working tightly as he processed the confession he had waited three agonizing years to hear. He reached out, resting his heavy, calloused hand flat against the hood of the car, right above the engine.

"I woke up in the hospital three days later," Jax said, his voice cracking slightly. "They told me my daughter was gone. Burned to ash. They gave me a tiny urn and told me to move on with my life." He paused, swallowing hard before looking straight into Clara’s tear-stained eyes. "But I found a witness statement from a trucker who saw a woman pull a child from that backseat before the tank blew. He described your car. He described your license plate."

"Are you going to take her back?" Clara choked out, her hands flying to the door handle to shield Lily. "She thinks I’m her mother, Jax! She doesn't remember anything else! Taking her away now will destroy her!"

Jax pulled his hand back from the hood, stepping away from the car and staring out into the darkening woods. He shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his leather vest, his broad shoulders slumping under an invisible weight.

"I watched you at the gas station, Clara," Jax said softly, not turning around. "I saw how she looks at you. I saw how you protect her. I spent three years wanting revenge on the person who took my little girl... but seeing you two together out there..." He stopped, letting out a ragged sigh that sounded like a sob. "I realized something terrible."

Clara leaned forward, straining to hear his next words over the whispering pines. "What?" she asked breathlessly.

Jax turned slowly, his face illuminated by the dying embers of the daylight filtering through the trees, revealing a tear tracking through his thick beard.

"If I take her back," Jax whispered, his voice breaking entirely, "I’ll just be breaking her heart the exact same way mine was broken three years ago."
