Chapter 6: The Longest Night

As the team of specialist surgeons arrived, Arthur was taken to a waiting room to rest. Julian stayed by the operating room doors, pacing back and forth under the harsh fluorescent lights. The guilt was heavy—if only he had searched harder, if only he hadn't accepted the false report years ago.
Hours passed in painful silence. Every beep of an ambulance outside made Julian’s chest tighten. He looked at Arthur sleeping soundly on the vinyl couch, wrapped in Julian’s oversized suit jacket.
In that quiet midnight hour, Julian realized that true strength wasn't found in corporate boardrooms or financial success. It was found in the quiet resilience of a mother who raised a child alone, and a little boy brave enough to shatter a headlight to save his mother’s life.
