Chapter 10: Learning to Trust

Adapting to a new life wasn't without its challenges. Arthur was used to being the protector, carrying burdens far too heavy for an eight-year-old. For the first few weeks, he saved leftover bread in his pockets, worried that food might become scarce again.

One evening, Julian found Arthur sitting on the kitchen floor, staring at a piece of toasted bread. Julian sat down beside him on the hardwood floor, taking out a slice of bread himself.

""You don't have to hoard food anymore, Arthur,"" Julian said gently. ""My job is to take care of you and your mom now. Your only job is to be a kid, play, and learn."" Tears filled Arthur’s eyes as he nodded, slowly letting go of the habits born from hardship.
